Oil Filter Cover

Oil Filter Cover
I did an oil change on our recently purchased 2010 Range Rover Sport. When I removed the filter, I noticed that there was a spring, a flat cap looking piece and a pointed cap looking piece sitting on the inner portion of the oil filter. They appear that they would normally be sitting on the inside, top part of the filter cover. I cleaned the cover thoroughly, inserted the filter and reinstalled the filter/cover. Question, is the spring and cap required? I plan on ordering a new oil filter cover but I needed to finish up the oil change and move the vehicle. Can the vehicle be driven without the spring/caps?
On a related note, I ordered an oil filter cover socket. Firstinfo F3546LR90.2mm 15 flutes. It worked great. I wish that I would have bought one three years ago. Makes the oil change so much faster and easier. Ordered through Amazon. It was about $15. Get one, save yourself the headache of trying to remove the oil filter cap without one.
