'03 Disco Subwoofer mod

Hi, I'm Räj. I'm new to both Disco ownership and your forum. I have been driving and building Ford Bronco II's for some years now, but decided to try something new and I love this thing! I have done quite a bit of small things to her, but she needed no major work. One thing I did recently was to upgrade the stock subs (that had turned to dust), and added a fitting amp for them. This is an easy cheap mod that will blow your mind! Hope it helps.

The Mod

Now here's the upgrade. I have the baseline sound system, no nav, no Harmon Kardon speakers... one amp to run all 10 speakers and the sub.
I first replaced the crap stock subs with a set of SWS Earthquake 6.5" subs. These are $139/pair online and are the bomb. Have half the mounting depth as stock, and a lot of bang for the buck.

The sound was better right off the bat, but still not a very pronounced low end all the way to the cockpit, so I bought an amp. A soundstream stealth class D 350w mono block. It was also $139 at Crutchfield online.
Tiny foot print, and very efficient. Perfect to go under the driver's seat along with the stock amp.

The 10 minute install

First install the subs. Takes no time at all, and no mods to the sub box in the rear door. Then run an 8ga power line from the main batt terminal in the fuse block, with a 30amp fuse holder to the driver seat. Then a short 8ga ground strap from the amp stand bolt. Then in the harness, locate the bright green wire (fourth from the rear on the gray side) it's the power on from the stereo. Attach it to the remote start amp wire. Then locate the four wires in the harness to cut and run through the amp. The amp has a hot in with a line level ground, so the power will not hurt. (Red w/bk stripe is R+, Wht w/blk stripe is R-, Purple w/blk stripe is L+ and Brown w/blk stripe is L-). This is all taking into account that you know a bit about installation, and can follow the directions that came with your amp, but the rest should be easy enough to catch on. In the next post is the result! Sadly the iphone mic makes bass turn into inaudible distortion, but you can see how much air this set up pushes.

Sorry about the link, but I'm a newb and couldn't get the video to embed properly. If you have any questions feel free to ask. If you want this upgrade but can't do installations, print the page and carry it to your installer to get him a head start. Thanks

Sorry, I just noticed the electronics forum. If the moderator wants to move this there, that would be great...

Nice work
How are they at playing lower freq? Im trying to figure out a way to seal up the rear door and run a shallow JL 10.
I did a pair of the earthquake 8" subs in the floor of an E93 M3. Impressive for free-air.
