Hood Blackout kits
 

The glare that comes from the white bonnet of my 2000 Discovery has me looking for a way to save my eye sight. I’ve seen a hood blackout kit advertised, and even mentioned in these pages, and it seems like the perfect solution. I’m a little concerned, however, about making an unalterable mistake with the otherwise nice paint job on the truck.

Is there anyone out there who might have some experience with the hood blackout kit who might give me an idea of what I’m getting into?

I have the Vigg Designs blackout on my hood. When I bought the truck, there were some pretty unsightly (and deep) scratches on the hood. The decal covered them completely. Fairly easy to install/place - had my 16 year old daughter help.

I would recommend a hood blackout decal. Worst case, you don't like the look or screw up the install. Peel it off and eat the cost, but your hood will be intact.

I have the decal on my 97. Actually...its the second one. If it gets scratched as my first one did, peel it off and replace. No problem. Hint...when cleaning it, DO NOT use a chemical cleaner. It will take away the "flat" color and it will become high gloss.

When putting on decals to various vehicles, I found that some soapy water on the back of the decal (or vinyl sign, etc.) helps you move it around until perfect, then use a credit card (wrestled from the death grip of SWMBO) to squeegee out any bubbles.

Another vote for Viggs, just get the 7-year 3M brand version. Get a friend, or two, a spray bottle full of water, two drops of dish soap to spray on the hood and the sticky side of the vinyl. Throw it on and position it as need be, then use a soft rubber squeegee to remove the water.

Any water bubbles left behind will go away with a few days.

i can get 8 cans of wal mart rattle can for the price of one can of rustoleum. with 8 cans of paint, rust aint getting thru.

well the paint is only as good as it's first layer. in my opinion you need to treat any rust and get a first layer on. after that you could go cheap without a problem. otherwise it will rust bubble underneath. just saying.

i'm doing the rust treatment, then rust seal paint and then rustoleum spray for color. i was thinking maybe a clear coat after that if i could get it matte enough. i am going to go vinyl on the scoop unless i change my mind back to painting it.
