I bought an '04 Disco that has developed the infamous "lifter knock". The advise I got from my mechanic ( a reputable Land Rover specialist) was to drive this high mile engine into the ground and save up to drop a new engine from Atlantic British in my truck. I asked about a diesel conversion and the guy scoffed at me... Seeing this thread has given me a glimmer of hope... LANDZU, where might I find more info on the GM 6.2L V8 you mentioned. Understanding the amount of changes that need to be made regarding the fuel lines, gas tank, etc. how do you go about making sure the transmission and differential will line up correctly?

Thumbs up 4BT Potato Chip Power!!!

The Cummins 4BT is pretty popular in the Jeep crowd. There was a massive program in the 80s and 90s to Re-power box style Chip,Bread and the most obvious the UPS trucks from gas V8 to the 4BT Diesels. Throw horsepower out with any Diesel with a few tweaks of the mechanical injection you can easily produce 300FT/LBS of Torque with the 4BT. I was planning to do the 4BT swap in my Full Size Jeep 4x4(too many projects too little time).
The 6BT is an incredible engine and it's easy to get caught up in the Massive Hype that surounds the engine but keep in mind this engine is MASSIVE!!!! This isn't the greatest attribute for hitting the trails, having an engine in your truck that weighs as much as your truck.
Your Best bet is to find a Chip truck with the 4BT drivetrain swap that into the Rover and scrap the Box truck after using all the bits and pieces required for the swap(it's always easier to work with the entire truck than a pile of engine, tranny, and randomness of a pulled 4BT off the internet.
Just as a side point before my Disco I sold my 7.3L Powerstroke Turbo Diesel 4X4 and My 5 Cylinder Turbo Diesel BenZ. The BenZ was converted to WVO I Cranked everything up to INSANE on the Rack,Waste Gate,Ram air intake and Straight Pipe off the Turbo on B99 the Car would Light the tires up on a first to second shift the car left a cloud of fries, egg rolls and nacho chips out of the tail pipe on B99 and a ton of confused looks out of the Bee can tail pipe Civic crowd!

Default Diesel, Chips and Fries, OH MY!

Thanks JMON,
I will now be scouring the internet for any 80s-90s cargo van that had been converted to a diesel. I notice that you've installed OME HD 2" lift on your Disco. I've priced it out and it looks like I can get the shocks and springs x4 for around $700. The install doesn't look too difficult. Other than the shocks and the springs, is there any other parts needed? Bushings, or anything like that? The guy at British Pacific couldn't think of any other parts needed, but he did say the U joint may need to be replaced after a while due to the "new" position of the axle in relation to where the steering column has settled since factory install. What say you?

Just be careful the popularity of Diesel projects over the past few years has made more than one owner of a 4BT re-powered Chip truck think he/she has a rare coin rusting on their back 40!(they don't, this engine was used in an insane amount of applications). A few of the other posts are correct in the fact that a re-power like this is a fuel tank to radiator project that you have to change everything UGH. You will need all the vacuum pumps to assist all kinds of systems you take for granted on gas vehicles (this is were having the entire parts truck to pick off of pays off). Look up Diesel engines on Wikipedia for a crash course on diesel vacuum issues.
If you're looking for something different you might want to consider re-powering your Rover with LPG this is very popular in the UK. There's more than a few people offering conversions in North America. My FSJ Jeep J10 used to have a dual fuel kit on it to run on LPG and gas for example. Most fuel injection kits are either gas or LPG only. No dual fuel kits because of the injectors. This is a more unique and less invasive than a Diesel conversion with a source of fuel that is the most abundant available in the USA Natural Gas and the Cheapest and Cleanest of them all. Food for thought....
As for your U joint-front prop shaft I don't claim to know anything or everything but between the Little British Guy that's my towns resident Rover expert, every U Joint on everything is going to need servicing and even with out lifting your Rover your front prop shaft will need to be rebuilt eventually If you S.T.A. on here there's tons of great info from everyone on this site regarding eventual front drive, prop shaft issues. It seems to be general consensus from my mechanic to everyone on this site that lifting your Rover more than 2" starts setting your drive-prop shafts up for failure due to extreme drivetrain angles. The only other thing I changed was my Blown front steering stabilizer with the OME HD Spring and Shock Kit. The Disco went from being a wobble wagon to solidly going down the road. Keep in mind the HD kit is Stiff!! I can't stress this more these springs would work great with a diesel conversion or a HD front bumper and winch combo but are very stiff on an unladen Rig. Have a Good Day Everyone,Jmon

I am doing something similar, but with a 6.2 or 6.5. Can you email me pictures of the radiator mounted and also info on the springs you sourced for the extra weight?
