Real world mpg
Now that a few folks have had a while to drive their Discovery V, what is the real world mpg for the US V6 gas powered models? For highway and around town?
Looking to shift from an LR4 (with the V8) and hoping it’s an improvement over the 9-11 mpg we currently get... |
I have 4,500 miles on my new discovery First Edition. After breaking in the car with a few trips to the lake house and a trip from Chicago to South Dakota I have been pretty close to 17 mpg around town. The highway miles at 18 mpg for our long trip out to South Dakota (we had 7 people and a Thule box top). Our last trip to the lake we got 20 mpg but hit a lot of stop and go traffic on the last part of our trip. I have also noticed better gas mileage when using shell, BP gas vs. the smaller chains in my area.

Thank you. That’s good to know. My LR4 is closer to 9 or maybe 10 around town. It’s the V8 model, but clearly the greater weight of the vehicle plays a big part too
17/20 is a substantial improvement |
This is more of a "your mileage may vary" (pun intended), as my 2006 LR3 has consistently been around 15-16 mpg in town, and anywhere from 18-23 mpg on the highway. Even towing a 2500 lbs trailer, the worst mileage I've ever had was around 13 mpg.

Does anybody have the diesel ? I currently have a 2005 LR3 V8 with 160,000 miles. Get about 16 mpg average. Just wondering if the extra money is worth the diesel option for mpg ?
|
My Disco 5 has not come in yet. I have a loaner HSE with a Diesel. I have seen 29mpg on a 185 mile trip. Around town/interstate driving from home to work and back I see avg 23.6mpg. These are all based on the computer not hand calc. I have a the SC v6 on order and they put me in this on my trade till it came in. I haven't spent that much time in the gas version but I am Very impressed on the Diesel. Hopefully I will not regret not getting it. I have a 21 bay boat and it pulls this boat with ease too.

Mileage
I'm seeing 23.5-23.7 in my combined driving with the diesel. have not run a complete tank on the highway yet, car only has 1500 miles on it. I'm heavy footed so I'm impressed, just filled it this morning at 436mi on the tank, took 18.4. so far I love the vehicle.

I have just over 10K miles on my D5 TD6. At least a 1/3 of the miles have been towing an almost 7K lbs travel trailer. I have been average about 22 mpg since new. In town, the Twin Cities, I average between 19 and 25. On one long drive without the trailer to Northern WI I average 29.5 mpg. My mileage has dropped a little with the cold weather and the 275/55R20 Goodyear Wrangler Dura Tracs that I have had mounted recently. But not much.

Looking to shift from an LR4 (with the V8) and hoping it €™s an improvement over the 9-11 mpg we currently get... 9-11 is pretty shocking. My wife gets a blended 17 in her ‘12 V8. Are you running bigger tires? |

I see 30.1MPG mainly highway consistently. Brian |
For full highway driving I got 30 at 70mph and 28.5 at 75.
Around town is 22. Combined is somewhere in between. Last few days was 26.7. |
Bringing this old thread back.
Our HSE Lux Si6 gets around 19-20 MPG on the Highway, but in normal commute and around town it seems to average 15 MPG. This is calculated by hand using gas pump and odo. The MPG indicator seem to say around 17MPG for around town and work commute (which includes some highway). Anybody else notice that the MPG indicator seem to be optimistic by 1-2 MPG sometimes. I have not ever seen it get more by hand calculation than the MPG indicator. Not a fill more or less pending gas pump. This is using premium 91 at Chevron or Shell. It is CA gas in the winter though, where I know CA gas is not as good for MPG than some other states due to all the crap they put in here. The Si6 only has about 3500 miles on it now, so will see if things get a bit better after 5k or 10k miles. |
My 2017 HSE consistently gets about 22 mpg with mixed city/highway driving using Costco premium fuel. This includes some mountain driving.
I don't drive it hard. The onboard computer is usually 1 to 2 mpg higher. I can get 25 mpg on an interstate highway trip of 150 miles or so. And I have no throttle lag. |

Also probably need to add my wife drives it mostly and she is an enthusiastic driver :driving: I am also not the slowest driver, but try not to be too hard on it. |
Consistently getting 20-22 MPG on my 2019 TD6. Depending on your usage, getting the TD6 might make sense if diesel is not significantly more expensive than premium gas. Here in Toronto (Canada) diesel is hovering around the price between regular to mid-grade. In that case, running the TD6 would be “cheaper” than running the Si6. However I’ve also heard that the TD6 doesn’t do well with constant short, urban runs (something about getting the DPF gummed up) and if that’s what you do, it’s beneficial to bring it on the highway for a run or two occasionally. YMMV (always love to end MPG related threads with that, lol) |
I have 5,400 miles on mine...I don't drive too slow or too fast. I use Premium non ethanol fuel. Avg. 17.9 mpg according to the computer in the car. I am actually disappointed. My prior 2015 Yukon Denali with a 6.2 liter V-8 (over 400 hp). averaged almost 20!

I have the Td6 in my 2018 DV and for the first 10,000 miles with the stock 235-65R19 Pirellis I averaged 26.1 MPG with an average speed of 35 MPH. At about 10,000 miles I switched to Cooper Adventurer ATs in 275-55R20 and currently average 25.1 MPG, but with the increased roll out of the larger tire it is actually closed to 25.7 MPG with an average speed around 35MPH. I'm currently just over 16,000 miles. I find that elevation gain or loss makes a big difference in my fuel economy. In my one way commute to work I have a roughly 1,000 foot elevation drop and regularly get 30 MPG, on the way home, I'm hauling it all back up the hill and the mileage suffers accordingly. I have had mileage as high as 40MPG on a one way trip (50+ miles) primarily downhill mostly highway (and likely a tailwind). I bought the TD6 knowing my longer commute (30 miles each way), the relatively low entry cost for the diesel (as compared to other offerings), the lack of engine noise, the torque, and the much better fuel economy/costs (especially when the Si6 should be running on Premium). I'd highly recommend the Td6 unless you do a lot of stop and go travel and have short commutes. It has been the experience of some of my friends that this type of driving does not work well with diesels requiring DEF (regardless of brand).

Did you need the Johnson lift to install those Dura Tracs?

I purchased my D5 SD4 with 5806 km on the clock. Its now done 16129 km of mainly mixed commuting and open highway driving, with about 1000 km towing a 1 ton trailer.
Distance 10323 km. Diesel usage 971 liters. This is equivalent to: 9.41 l/100 km 25 miles / US gallon 30.02 miles / UK gallon. The dash display normally shows about 8.9 l/100 km |
Have Disco 5 2018 and I get 11-12 miles driving only around NYC area, on highway get close to 20 mgp.
|
As I asked the initial question, I can now post my experience after 9000 miles in our 2018 HSE Lux (Si6). We get around 18-19 US mpg for a mix of town and longer runs. Drops down a few it short hops around town only. Much much better than the old V8 LR4 we had previously...
