Windshield leak... sigh
 

I am the newest winner of the Disco 5 windshield leak disaster (2019). Significant water accumulation in the passenger side floor board. Insurance says will not cover the cause of the leak, only damages from the leak.... Therefore, replacing the windshield is on me.

TSB Service Action N56NAS1 - "Windshield Water Ingress" which includes my VIN number was valid through 7/31/23. Does this mean I am completely out of luck? I cannot fathom that there is nothing else that can be done for such a significant and clearly well-known issue. Any advice?

I know the standard LR fix for the leaky windshield involved replacement of the windshield but I cannot understand why a good glass shop could not remove the leaky windshield, clean off the old adhesive/sealant, and reinstall it properly.

Last week, during a car wash, I noticed a leak from the top of both the driver and passenger side of my car. I contacted the dealership, and they provided me with the phone number of a person who could reseal the windshield for $225. I had the job done, and since then, there has been no more leaking. The person who resealed the windshield informed me that if the issue persisted, we could involve the insurance company. However, in my case, it was not necessary.

I have a '22 Disco 5 HSE. 1 1/2 years into service it started leaking. There is a design fault here, and pretty much every 3 -4 years, it will leak, more ... or less. Make friends with the glass shop if out of warranty. Mine has been fixed under warranty, but I am not holding my breath that won't happen again.

Took it to a glass shop. They pressed the windshield from the inside and it's very easy to see how it lifts away from the frame. $400 to attempt a lift, reseal, recalibration - if it doesn't break. $1,300 to fully replace it. $0.10 of electrical tape and no leaking is feeling pretty affordable right now 😅

Mine was removed and reset. The only reason I can see for a new replacement, when the glass is not damaged, is to pay the shop more money. A LR windshield is expensive. So is camera/sensors recalibration, which is generally not required for a removal/reinstallation.

It could also be that some insurance companies are more likely to cover the cost of a (damaged) windshield replacement versus resealing, which would be a non-accident related repair. That would mean more money for the shop and less cost for you.

I have spoken with three auto glass companies in town and they all have very clearly said that it's a 50/50 Whether the window comes off successfully or not. Newer vehicles are more likely to be successful. I guess there's enough residual adhesive that can still causes stress ad makes a micro crack worse? I wish they were telling me, "Of course we could lift it with no problem"

Definitely helpful that it does not need to be recalibrated! I think I can take that back and save $275 on one quote to lift it and reseal.

The place I had it done provided a similar caveat. However, their view was that the warning is based on their work in general and not specifically Land Rover. However, as is true for just about every LR component, the LR windshield is much more expensive than those on typical vehicles.

The main problem is that the windshield may break while being removed, especially if it does have even unseen cracking. My feeling is that since the leaking is due to inadequate adhesive, breaking would be less likely. But I don't have the stats to back up that belief.

i have a 2019 disco that needs its 3rd windshield. how is this not a class action law suit by now? the dealer wants me to pay for this one yet they keep
putting faulty windshields in. it’s pretty mind blowing that this isn’t a recall?! having rain fall
on your fave while you drive is an immediate safety issue. i want to sue them- anyone know of a case going? i’m livid. i can’t drive my car in NY when it rains or snows!! thanks in advance

I'm sitting in the glass shop now and they let me look at the window. They're charging $250 to remove and reseal. That's the best deal I found around here. They let me look at the glass after they lifted it and the news was interesting. Still waiting for them to clean and reseal it. It can still break from here 🙏😬

Here are some pictures. He pointed out locations on the windshield where the sealant failed to bond to the windshield. It completely lifted away from the frame with zero adhesion to the glass. He had to cut it in other locations. That has to be dangerous because the airbag presses against the windshield in a crash and if the windshield doesn't hold, the airbag doesn't deploy properly.

I'll add this - I'm not the original owner and I am not sure if someone has lifted and resealed this windshield before or if this is from the factory.

The windshield failed to bond at all here (smooth glue). Water was leaking in from here down into the cabin

You can see the metal strip on the top of the windshield because no glue bonded here so no glue suck to cover it up when it was removed! 😬

There was a spot with no glue at all or it wasn't sealed at all on the bottom
