Default Hi All

Hello everyone.

As most of you can tell I'm new here and have myself a 1999 Land Rover Disco 3.9v8 and love it.

But the love is dying so I hold my arms out to all that can help.

I have searched here but could not find the same problem so if anyone knows where to post please let me know and I will try and move post to there.

My wife drove car to school on way home it cut out, she said light was on so i put 2 cans of fuel in and it still does not start - if I kick the fuel tank it will start but cut out and if I get someone to keep kicking the tank while I start it, it will run and as soon as they stop it dies.

My Landy is stuck outside some strangers house and I want it home please can anyone advise ???

Many Thanks in advance

Paul.

Hi Paul.. welcome to the forum!

Have you checked to make sure the fuel pump is working (getting power)? I mean, can you hear it running for a few seconds when you switch the key on?

The pump motor might have kicked the bucket... pardon the pun

HI Tooltech thanks for the welcome and thank you for replying quickly

When ignition is switched on I do here a buzzing sound but not every time.

Sometimes it tries to start but nothing and other times it just turns over until someone kicks the fuel tank.
Could it be fuel filter ??
Could I take pump out and clean it ??
Could it be connections ??

Sooooo many questions (lol)

I run my own business so am working all hours - what would be the easiest method of checking fuel pump functionality ??

Regards

Kicking the fuel tank sounds to me like that's creating enough pressure to keep motor running for a few revolutions..

Yes. Yes. And Yes are the answers to your questions! Ha, I'm sorry...

It could be a number of things, of course. But first off, check/change fuel filter. As far as what to do with the pump itself, I'm not sure exactly. You say it works only sometimes when switching on the key? It should run every time, unless it's on its last leg (perhaps couldn't hurt to pull pump out and inspect it, no?).

Great - Thank you.

If kicking it is creating enough pressure to keep it going would that not indicate a seal has gone somewhere or is it normal if the pump is failing for it to act this way ??(idk)

I'll order filter and check connections/pump tonight if I have time.

If OK I shall report back with an update tomorrow sometime.

Mid writing this I had a quick look at filters and pumps and there are so many - how do I know which is my one ??
