First of all congratulations, and welcome to the family. Please don't take this as mean but..

From a rover owner with decent knowledge, you should be putting AT LEAST 91 (i put 93 in mine). The cylinders run hotter in rovers and need the extra boost for some reason i cant explain. you can run 87, but you shouldn't run it long (IE. a full tank every few mouths). You most likely wont feel the effects of it now, but in about 20k miles you will start having problems (leaking head gaskets, engine knocking), then after 50-70k you can see large problems costing in the $1000's. YOU HAVE TO PUT AT LEAST 91 OCTANE, CHANGE YOUR OIL EVERY 3,000 MILES!!!! i know land rover recommends 7.5k but that's the minimum, you CAN NOT do the minimum with these trucks if you want them to last over 50k. WHEN LAND ROVER SAYS SOMETHING, THEY MEAN IT, AND DO BETTER THEN WHAT THEY SAY, that just how it goes.

when people start "cutting corners" like this, you get the "LAND ROVER SUCKS, NO RELIABILITY" rant reviewsgoing. a few extra $15 or free oil changes will help save you, there IS reliability in these trucks, you just have to do better them the recommendations change oil2 times every time they say 1. Doing the recommendations, is like a family of 6 living on minimum wage, it just doesn't work for a long time. USE 91-93 OCTANE NO MATTER WHAT!

That's what I've heard. I've also heard that shell high test is the best to get. On my way home after purchasing my first LR Disco, I filled it up with 93.

Can I have some of what you're smoking? I'd very much like to know what sort of work an engine needs after the use of lower octane fuel.

While I may be new to this forum, I am not new to Rovers, nor mechanics.

I currently own (pause to count) three Range Rovers, three Discos and a project Series IIA. To my knowldege, none fo them have ever had anything but cheap fuel put in them. My former daily driver, now mainly trail rig is a '95 Disco with more than 225K miles on it. My '93 LWB daily driver (once it gets a new transfer case installed, business has been very good lately) has an engine from a '95 Disco (the truck was an eBay buy of one of my clients and led a hard life before I got it) and it has many miles on it with cheap gas.

I defy you to provide any real proof of engine damage from the use of lower octane fuel.

That said, I agree with you on the issue of oil change frequency. Something else that can't be ignored is the need to flush and refill cooling systems no less often than every two years. Oil changes and avoiding overheating are the two most important things a Land Rover owner can do to ensure the longevity of their trucks.

I’m thinking this is more of a hot topic than we realize I’ve just joined the disco world and am into stuff all ready that’s ok I love em the gas thing though I’m running the occasional top fuel now and again had no ill effects till my misfire probs I posted on this can I have a general feeling on the gas problem I have no dealership we’re i live so on my own so to speak thanks
