First, your 98 is a 4.0, second why?
Neither the tranny or diffs could handle that sort of extra power and most how have tried to turbo theirs, landed up burning piston from lack of gas.

Its a Land Rover. Not a civic.

I think that's what he's talking about! The Discovery is not generally made for turbo and superchargers. Not to say its impossible but you can expect a hefty bill $$$$$$ by the time you get everything else all reconfigured to handle the extra output. We are talking about a different transmission, different engine perhaps, and who knows what else. Landys are made for off-road/on-road luxury, if you want to play with superchargers, turbo and fart cans than stick with a Honda civic or a Ford focus. These cars are much cheaper, eaiser to modify, parts are easy to get and many people own them. Land Rover is a whole other ballpark! Honestly I can't imagine what or why you would want to put turbo on a landy in the first place.

Guys, like he said, it's a junk truck. Let him have fun! I'd be doing the same thing!

get a euro trash 2012 range rover.

robertmirwin 08-20-2013 03:11 PM

dont let these guys bring you down!!!!!!!! if you want to turbo your rover then TURBO THE DAMN THING!!!!!!!!! at the very least it would be bad ass while it lasted. If i had a spare rover to turbo i would. In my personal opinion i dont think you are going to destroy your rover. they make kits to drop in crate 350's and thats twice the power and torque of a stock disco and they stay together.

good luck and i want to see some pics and a good write up if you follow through with it.

ummmm... it is the fragile driveline system that won't hold up. Stock front shaft of a D2 will do it with very little encouragement.

As for turbos, check you history book. Grandpa may have sported around in a 62-63 Buick F85 Jetfire, the first production turbo car made in the USA. And it used this same engine block.

There are Rovers with superchargers. But most of us are content to just have the thing run daily and not overheat. an older Rover has many things to repair.

Since this has been dug up...

Chariots of Fire used to sell bolt on kits, and I believe they also
produced some "Limited Edition" Rover vehicles. You can find more info
on www.rangerovers.net. That being said, I have installed one of their
supercharger kits on a 1997 D90. It was not chipped. It made the truck not quite
the slug it used to be..

Cheers

As Buzz has mentioned, the Rover drive train can't take that sort of a power increase.
Don't waste your time and or money thinking how cool it would be cause it ain't going to happen, I don't care who might have a kit, your truck will destroy itself.

Savannah Buzz 08-22-2013 08:52 AM

I look at it this way. Most guys that want to do this have bought a high miles used Rover. The engine is not as good as a new one. But the drive train is also worn. People tear up shafts and diffs all the time. Can it be done? Yes, with enough money and Tony Stark's basement. Is it worthwhile? Well, that same time and treasure could go toward tires, lockers, honkin' roof rack, lights, dual battery, and all the other things to make it a better off road machine.

Who buys a Land Rover without some spark of an idea of off road use? BTW, someone posted a pix recently of a BMW V12 dropped into a Rover.
