a great one from a (service manager)

OK i i took the bait and let a local repair shop do one of their free inspection on my new to me 2002 discovery. the service manager asked me how many miles on it. he then proceeded to warn me that it needs a timing belt (yes belt ) every 60k and it costs 1500$ because u need to get special tools from england. i don't know allot about this engine but i worked on the old Buick's and looked at the exploded view of this engine. one thing i don't see (timing belts ) i look fwd to their inspection report

Is it the lr dealer or not? If its a local guy then stay away from them. No timing belt on the gas engine, diesel yes. But it might have some head issues.

No timing belt on the gasoline v8. Timing chain, yes.

The best thing you could do is save your money and put it towards an Ultra Gauge. Purchase the ultra gauge ( you're gonna want it once you find your rover) and plug it in on potential purchases. The UG will tell you everything you need to know. Sometimes overheating issues are hidden. The UG will reveal these hidden gremlins and save you from buying a money pit.

local guy. i know there is no timing belt on the 4.0 i almost busted out laughing and asked for the keys back. however i think his mechanics capable of checking the Case oil thats all i really wanted. just though i would let someone else look over it and the a 2nd opinion. my work does a ton of business and has their fleet serviced there. they had a free offer so i took it

You should have said, "Ok, yeah, better replace it then."

Your fleet manager may want to review options as well.

well they redeemed themselves in the end backtracked on the belt thing and came up with its in good shape but we cant get parts they confirmed my suspicions it was a steering u joint gone bad i will go under tomorrow and confirm as i have little faith in anyones work but mine (unless i know ya ) does anyone have any links to where i can just buy the uv joints ?

antichrist 02-21-2013 06:54 AM

Any of the used parts vendors here should have them.

I would have set up a work contract for him to change the timing belt. Then when he said he's done, sue him for fraud.
