thinking about buying an 1980's defender with J19 2.5 TD engine
I currently own 3 land rovers. A 1989 Range rover Hunter, edition, a 2000 land rover discovery, and a 2010 Range rover. I have bee looking for a more "classic" land rover to add to our family. I have seen a 1988 Land rover defender with a 2.5 TD with only 82000 miles... I am quite interested but after looking around the forum i've seen that some blokes hate this engine. Anyone have a history with this model engine? any thoughts on getting a truck with this set up... or should I stay far away from it. Thanks, Brent

They basically took the 2.5NA and put different pistons in it and slapped a turbo on it. If you abuse it, they won't hold up for very long. Later versions I think had some updates in the block to help them last longer.
I'd take one, with the understanding that at some point I'd probably have to upgrade to a 200tdi. |
unfortunately, thats what they did.
kind of like GM in the 80's trying to make the sbc a diesel |
Thanks guys, great info... I think i'll look at rovers that were pre- turbo or post the 2.5 TD... appreciate the input.

yes they are and sound awesome under wide open throttle. It gives music to listen to while you watch the gas gauge drop :D

I'd want to convert to a late style rear fuel tank if I had a v8 in a 90... the side tank is tiny. I'd drive a v8. Heck, I'd take whatever engines came in defenders. Even that 2.5TD.

Thanks everyone for the great feed back... I think i'm just gonna focus on the rovers I already have....
