Just look at the usual things you would on any car. Special ones might be the head gaskets, chances are they were replaced, if not they probably need to be. The suspension might need new air shocks or have been swapped with springs. Listen to the brake pump when you turn the key to the II position. If it runs for 20 seconds and stops, its fine. If its shorter like 4 seconds or really long over 30 seconds, then the accumulator might be going out. Other things like spark plugs and wires need to be replaced/checked. Use your best judgement on it.

If you care about a working A/C system see if it has had the Blend doors replaced. I just had to have mine replaced and it is expensive I also had them do the heater core o rings and temp core sensor. All of these items are cheap in parts but expensive in labor since the dash needs to be removed. I would look for a Rover where these items have been done. LRScott covered the other areas I would worry about. Whatever you buy make sure it has service records, you want to be sure it was well cared for.
