HVAC life in a P38 broken….
Ok so when I started I had no fans and a test book with a ! On the display.
I have cleaned the cabin air filters Took care of the relays as they were extra crispy original recipe Thought I couldn’t pull codes so I ordered a Icarsoft LR V3.0 that said if could read the hvac etc on the P38. Long story short it can barely read the powertrain codes…. I would not recommend this one for the P38 Then I figured out with an adapter cable the Launch x431 could access it all So here is what I got to start with and what I have showing for codes that stay https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/landrov...269f5d9a6.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/landrov...fa037ff25.jpeg So learned folks of the P38 aside from the dead blower motor what thoughts do you have on chasing this down |
I wish I was learned. I know bad/worn out blend motors are a thing on P38’s. I know on mine I needed to replace a blower motor. I also know that the HVAC doesn’t like low Freon pressure (but will still work). Can you clear the codes and then see what comes back?
|
And my windscreen fault was burnt relay connectors on the bottom of the fuse/relay box. I think that’s most of my P38 HVAC knowledge.
I guess I’ve been blessed with not too many HVAC faults. |
The second pic with the blower motor and code 33 is what comes back everything else seems to be working
|
Revisiting this, the heated windscreen in the front only works in a couple spots not worried about that fault to much.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/landrov...91fabccc7.jpeg The left blower motor seems to be working ok but who knows. The right motor doesn’t work at all so I am going to try and swap in one from a parts truck. The AC Compressor will cycle randomly for a second or two. Pressures look good on the ac gauges. Anyone know where I should start looking for compressor clutch control fault? |
I had a blower motor fail. The heating was terrible. I swapped in a used one and it’s worked fine since.
I haven’t needed to dig into my ac, so I’m not at all familiar with it. |
Grabbed the blower motor out today and the climate control head unit. I’ll see where that takes me tomorrow.

Alright so I tore into the center stack on the P38 and got the old control unit out. To be honest this was just a guess as I really had nothing pointing at the HEVAC unit being the problem. So I got it swapped in fired up the truck checked the codes and saw all the same data. Then it dawned on me I hadn’t cleared anything. So I cleared it and heard the compressor kick to life under the hood. So I hooked up the gauges and put some more Freon in the system and we have cold AC. I didn’t fully charge the system so I can check pressure this evening and see if it’s holding. If it is full charge and moving on. That just leaves the right hand blower motor I think to have what we need working!

Right hand resistor pack appears to be bad and that is what is keeping the fan from running. I’m leaning towards skipping the fan speed control and just putting the switched 12v straight to it which would in theory run the fan at full speed whenever the fan is turned on by the control unit.

Why not!
