Possible transfer case issue?

got a weird problem with the p38 that started recently. If I take off from a stop and give it full throttle, I get a quick “clunk, clunk, clunk” noise in the driveline. It’s most noticeable when the pavement is wet or slippery with snow. Checked the u joints on the driveshafts and that doesn’t seem to be an issue. Suspecting a viscous clutch in the transfer case, but never seen one do that when failing. All the viscous couplings I have seen go bad have just locked up completely and make turning the vehicle difficult and the it more or less skips and hood through corners. Anyone else come across this issue? Don’t want to throw parts at this one as these viscous couplings are a little pricey.

I haven’t had this issue myself, but I understand that high mileage P38 transfer cases have chains that have stretched too much and will skip a tooth (or more) when giving it throttle. I’m guessing that this is what you’re experiencing. My understanding is that it doesn’t typically cause any more problems and replacing the chain will solve your issue.

I think you are right. It’s the only other item that seems to wear out on these transfer cases, besides leaking seals obviously. Now the question is who makes a decent replacement chain? Original Land Rover parts are long gone. And I definitely don’t trust britpart brand. I hear many of the cheaper brand stretch very prematurely

Yeah, I haven’t had to do mine yet. I hear you about the quality of available parts these days.
