WTB: Disco 2 Transmission Oil Pan

1999 – Disco Series 2: Two weeks ago the front drive shaft busted on me and took the transmission pan with it. I didn’t realize that I had the additional pan damage until I was replacing the drive shaft with a new (to me) that I bought online.

Online search for a use one has come empty. Anyone has an idea of where I can buy a used oil pan? Only AB is showing a new one at a price tag of $399.95.

I am posting this request in several forums hoping to find one ASAP. Any information will be greatly appreciated!

Tony

I have plenty for a fraction of that cost. I PMed you over on LRO. Check your messages and get back to me.
Cheers,
Paul

I need a transmission

Well, the saga continues. Finally found time to replace the oil pan, and one more time, found additional damage. The drive shaft not only took the oil pan with it, but it took the tranny as well. I don't know how I missed this when I was replacing the drive shaft, but I did.

For some reason, I get an "upload error" when trying to post pics to show the damage, but you can see them here:

Debating if I'm going to put more money into the Disco or not. It may not be worth it, but I need to make an informed decision.

If you have a tranny for a 99 Disco 2, please PM me the cost, plus shipping to 32750.

Thanks!

You were likely hitting a file size limit on the up load. I copied these over. Great pix of bad problem. The one thing is that most Rovers in the boneyard are there for overheating, and trannys can be cheap. Like at my local LKQ they are $125 w/ $30 core, and have a 30 day warranty. Many yards don't allow jacks, so guys just borrow a back seat from something and let it flop down on that.

Dismantlers have the advantage of seeing the vehicle driven in, and you'll be getting a better part.

This story reminds me of a customer I had a few years ago. As he was driving up to CT from FL his driveshaft exploded while crossing the George Washington Bridge at 4am in the morning! He had the truck towed to a shop in Danbury, CT. He called me up looking for a good driveshaft. I had a good rebuilt one in stock but warned him to thoroughly check the transmission. He replied that the shop where the truck was located had done and inspection and the transmission was fine. He came up to my shop at noon to buy the driveshaft. Two hours later he called looking for a transmission. Neither he or the shop mechanic saw the extent of the damage at first glance.

It sucks but I could repeat that story at least a dozen times. There are things that Land Rover did in the design of these DII's that are simply unpardonable.

I try to make new D2 owners aware of this. LR saved money on leaving off those grease fittings and a heat shield and put it toward the low life span key fob and ADT alarm immobilization system (Always Dang Trouble).

Nevermind the little things, how about a frame that splits down the seam due to rust from the inside out. It seems to especially plague '03 models. I have a friend who used to work at a Land Rover dealership that shall remain nameless. He's amazed there hasn't been a class action suit against Rover over the horrible quality of the steel they used, especially towards the end of the production run.

I agree with Paul I have only been associated with Rovers for 6 months and I have already seen 3 vehicles thAt the drive shift went through the tranny. Caught up in the craze I went out and bought an 03. It's already in the shop misfiring on the # 7 cylinder . I replaced the plus and wires and its still doing it guess a new coil is next

Thanks for bringing the pics over and the tip about the size. I have a couple of options (none that cheap), but I'm still thinking about what I'm going to do. I am a Rover guy since I bought a Series IIA back in 98 or 99 and usually love them, but this one has been a PITA.
