What proper North American male can't say they were shaped by White Fang? I also loved To Start A Fire. The man finally dies because, "he lacked imagination". Awesome.
I too have convinced myself for the need to own and maintain a vehicle that far exceeds the needs I have. In my quest for nature I find myself in it in two tracks that have been traveled before, at fishing holes that I used to walk to, and trails I wondered where they went.
While I may not participate in any "Camel Trophy" moments, I was the only one that drove through the deep snow to where we usually park to fish. All the Chevy Z71 fellas parked on the plowed portion of the road.
That was a great piece of writing, thanks for sharing it with us.

We used to watch Mutual of Omaha's Wild Africa on Sundays on the 19" Zenith color tv, rabbit ears and all with aluminum foil to increase the reception.
Those were the days, 3 channels to choose from, 4 if the cloud cover was just right.
Now I have over 300 channels and there is nothing worth watching.
To Start a Fire, thats the story of the guy in the woods during winter where he freezes to death but the town is just over the next hill right?
I love that story, a great story about never giving up.
The Old Man and the Sea...Moby Dick and my all time favorite Robinson Crusoe.
I read that article today and it brought all kinds of girly emotions to the surface, I love to explore, I dont mind scratches on my truck, and lots of people turn and look when I drive by.
Like you biketeach, more tool than I need.
