Ticking noise and wandering idle

Just got this 97 disco 1 and there's a small ticking noise coming from the engine and a wandering idle.
the guy I bought it from said the engine had been replaced and so on, but I'm not sure what's going on..
The idle almost sounds like you are accelerating and then stopping to a normal idle..
Any ideas or suggestions as to what might be happening??

Can you post a video?

Without hearing the sound, all bets are off. These cars tend to make a great range of noises, especially when neglected.

I had a similar issue. Turned out the manifold bolts to the Y-pipe were loose. Apparently it's pretty common. Should help with the tick. Idle issue is probably something separate all together.

Needing more info on the ticking, does the tick occur when you first start it up until it gets warm? Does it show up after it is up to temp and not while cold? Or is it present at all times? Does it go away with higher RPM's or get worse? And finally what oil are you using?
