Tires for 2004 Discovery general use

Hello All
purchased a 2004 discovery 8 months ago and having steering wobble problem. dealer said that tires are warped/cupped. he recommended HTR SPORT H/R 255/55R18 109H by Sumitomo.
they will charge approx $900 to install and balance/align.
anyone have any views on this tire or recommend better tires for general use city/highway?

Try Tirerack. They have all the reviews on tires you can read. I have Sumitomo's on my M3 and they work well asa high performance tire. Canlt say anything about a truck tire.

900 is alot of tires. try shopping around. Ebay has good deals on tires sometimes,

i did my researck on tire rack and came up with 2 also after a few calls to tire specialists.
sumitomo htr sport H/P & Kumho KL51.
kumho cost alittle more but have better consumer report on all conditions.
tough one but i will update after i have run the winner for approx 7k miles.
thanks again:rolleyes:

I guess tread wear is the most important thing to look at. Being thr gross weight of this vehicle is up there with the M1 Abrams, i would look at that as my #1 limiting factor.

Are you going to be doing any offroading?

tires tires more bloody tires

i found another to check into general grabber HTS are at the top of comsumer report. cost a little more but have longer tread than the other 2. i might have a local tire dealer who will let me test drive them.
thanks again:cool:

What kind of tires came on your Disco? GY Wranglers, by chance? I've got an '04 as well with Wranglers on it and they're cupping. The garage I have service my truck tells me it's a common problem with the Wranglers on a Disco.

Please post what you decide on and then update us on how they do!

The 255/55/18 is a bad size to use on the Disco. The suspension of the Disco is already Stiff from the factory. Adding low profile tires, only makes it worse. I would recommend buying 265/60/18. It will fill the tirewell nicely even at factory height and will ride much more comfortable. The Goodyear Silent Armors have been very good tires to me, on every type of terrain. That is what I'm putting on my Disco II.

Thanks Jantiz, that's a handy piece of information! My tires still have a great deal of tread left on them, but once the cupping starts to get bad I'll be looking for a replacement set of some sort. I'll definitely look at bumping up a size.

Cheers!

What about a 255/70/18? I found a DEAL on a set of new Bridgestone Dueler H/T tires in that size. I can get the full set for just under $500, shipped! Anyone have any feedback on that tire?

Disco_Fever 03-17-2009 09:49 AM

Ohhh.... I think I've learned why they're such a deal... they don't seem to be very good! Lousy reviews for this tire at tirerack.com. :(
