Hi guys so on my 95 Disco 1 I have a bad starter, my local junk yard had a 96 disco with a 4.0 not sure if they have the starter is in that one, a 99 disco S2 and a 00 S2 just wanted to know if the starters on those would be compatible with my disco.
Note: I did go to see how much it would be to get i rebuilt it was $65 at two different places. Also the junk yard charges only $35 dollars for all starters.

 

They're all the same. If you get one from the bone yard get the one with lowest mileage........ New are $169.

 

D2 starters are slightly more powerful with a stronger AMP motor, so I'd go with a D2 unit. I slapped one in my 98 and it fires up considerably quicker.

 

I'd like to see proof of that. That is a false statement, same part number covers many, many Rover models - RTC6061N. I think it's a disservice to give false information to those less knowledgeable. Mean Green is the only higher torque starter available that I know of.

These starters are basic four brush starter motors. You replaced a bad part for a good one so of course it "seemed" to be stronger - the brushes had far less wear which equals lower resistance, faster turning. By the way I did the same, bought a 40k DII starter and replace a 150k original that had three brushes wiped out, no telling how long it operated off of just two before it failed.

Go to any Auto Parts website like Auto Zone for example and pull up a 94-99 D1 starter vs a 99-04 D2 starter. First off they're different part #'s (D1 P/N: 17317 $156) vs (D2 P/N: 17683 $91) then if you read the specs the D1/D2 starters have different KW ratings. From what I researched vs pulling out of the air was that the newer D2's used stronger starters vs RRC/D1's. They're both "Bosch" starters, but with different specs.

On "other" forums this is kinda common knowledge. I do not troll, or go around on Forums spreading lies or myths. I am here to learn, and help people with Land Rover's.

BTW: The 98 D1 starter I pulled was perfectly fine, I just had the chance to get a D2 starter cheap so I went for it and made my original a trail spare.

Core charge was 20.00 for auto zone, even with that cheaper than rock auto, carparts, or partsgeek.

Very impressed with the quality of it for 91.00. I looked at it before I bought it.

 

My preference are the Denso gear reduction starters from britishstarters.com.

 

I have to say, this is the first time I've ever heard there was a measureable difference between the Bosch/Denso starter motors used on RRC's, DI's, DII's and P38a's.

I'm not trying to throw more fuel to the fire but I would rather take the word of Land Rover specialist parts sellers like Rovers North (STARTER MOTOR V-8, PLE867, NAD101490 - Rovers North - Classic Land Rover Parts), Atlantic British (Land Rover Starter Motor (Part # RTC6061N): Starter Fits Most Land Rover Models) and Lucky8 (DI part # NAD101490, DII part # NAD11490 it's a little tricky with their site to simple cut and paste for the DI and DII) over the likes of AutoZone.

If you could, besides using AutoZone as your proof that the starters for DI's and DII's are different, cite on what other bulletin boards this is common knowledge. Again, I'm not trying to bust *****, it's just that I've never heard your assertion before.

Compare on Rock Auto, Carparts, Partsgeek, Advanced, Napa, Oriellys, and they all list different part #'s for 99% pf the starters with only the Bosch being the same P/N between say a 98 D1 and 04 D2 for the starter on Rock Auto. I read about it on a few UK forums, and Discoweb.

RRC/D1/D2/P38 starters all look exactly alike on the outside (with the exception of the solenoid having an additional small blade connector on the D2's), I think it has to do with the internals. I think the newer D2/P38 starter is just being sold and used for older RRC/D1's so the entire range gets the same thing now. Or all the stuff I read was a bunch of lies and a LR V8 starter is a LR V8 starter.. I got the D2 one cheap, and made my original a spare, and I was just passing along what I had heard.
