Default Do you have death wobble? Please read!

About 3 months ago I started to notice a loose feeling in the steering of my 94 Disco. I replaced a ball joint on the track rod, but it was still there. I would hit a bump and the steering wheel would violently shake and vibrate. After some thought I removed the heat shroud from the steering shaft and found this:

#3 in the picture was loose, and allowing the shaft to rotate some before the splines would engage.
I applied locktite and tightened. After this, the steering felt very smooth and firm, NO shakes when hitting bumps anymore.

If you have recurring death wobble PLEASE check this bolt!

I think I'll go ahead and loctite them preemptively. I do like steering.

Any time there is death wobble the list I posted in another thread should be checked more or less in the order listed.

Most steering shaft bolts I've seen over the years at the dealer level have lock-tite.

I agree about the diagnostic order, I'm offering this up for the guys who continue to have issues. It's certainly worth checking on these olrder vehicles.

I haven't checked that yet, will today. I thought I would drop in here first. I'll post back to let you know if those bolts are loose. I do know my steering damper is real sloopy, the gromets on both ends look like they are almost gone.

I checked all the bolts I could under the heat/dust cover. They're all good and tight. Thanks

thanks for the heads up, i have recently gotten the death rattles, and replaced the front shocks, they were the oem ones from england, said landrover right on 'em! Had to remove them and then cut the bolts off with the angle grinder to get the new ones on. That cured 99% of the shimmy at high speeds, so I will def check this bolt out. Thanks for the diagram!

First time I took Clover on the highway and hit a bump it went crazy on me. Told a mechanic and he told me everything except the moon could be causing this problem and repair would be rather expensive.
Found this thread tightened the bolts, #11 was exceptionally loose, and it cured it 100%, take that Mr. Lying Mechanic

Brit and Clover the Rover
