Default special tools needed?

I bought some E sockets (shaped like female torx) at Harbor Freight yesterday thinking that's what the valve cover bolts and Manifold bolts were, and when they didn't fit I discovered in the archives that I need an 8mm 12 pt socket for the valve covers and perhaps a 12mm 12 pt for the manifolds? (my 1/2" 12 pt seemed a bit loose) So... are there any E headed fasteners on this truck? If not, the Es go back next time I am in town.

And are there any other "odd" tools I should look for? I worked for Mac Tools in the 70s and the company that made Craftsman tools from 80 to 04 so I have a pretty good collection of normal tools, but all my 8mm sockets are 6 point as are my 12 and 13mm ones. HF had some 3/8 and 1/2" drive "spline" sockets which said they would work on on 6 pt, 12 pt and square fasteners. Would these be right for the manifold bolts? And if so are the bolt heads metric or SAE and what size? (the 7 pc metric sets went from 10mm to 19mm skipping 12mm and a couple of others)

12pt 5/16 fits better and is easier to find than 12pt 8mm. Get 1/4 drive.

X2.

I found that a 12mm 12pt socket fit best on the exhaust manifold bolts.

Thanks, Eric,

5/16 is just a tad smaller than 8mm so it should be a snug fit. By coincidence I had bought a cheap 12 pt wrench set yesterday that included SAE and metric. I used the 8mm on the outside valve cover bolts this morning; they all needed to be tightened and one was a couple of turns loose. Too bad I can't get the wrench on the inside bolts, but I hope when I get a socket on them my oil leaks will be a lot less.

The seats of a D2 are bolted in with the E bolts. I'm not sure about on a D1

I just orderd a Sears Craftsman 12 pt 1/4" drive set that has 9 metric and 9 SAE sockets plus a ratchet for $25; my old 1/4" set is also Craftsman, 50 years old, and still going strong. Hope the new set is not Chinese.

I'll see what they have in 3/8 and 1/2 inch drive sockets when I pick them up. My D1 seats have hex head bolts, so the E sockets are definitely going back.

I had to pulled out a seat from my DII and thought I used a 6 pt socket on the bolt.
