Default Rich exhaust and soot

***WARNING NEWBIE ALERT***

Hello everyone I just purchase my first Disco in the hopes of a great driving experience as well as trying to lear a thing or 2 about auto repair. It's a 2004 Discovery series 2. I have done some small things so far like replace the head unit and some trim work. But I have been noticing that on warm up especially the exhaust smells rich and there are black deposits at the end of the tail pipe. My mpg also sucks. I wanted to see if anyone has encountered this and if I should replace the o2 sensor could this be causing the issue? I haven't run the codes yet. I also plan on adding Seafoam, is there anyone that could shed some light on this process? Any help would be appreciated.

Joe - These rigs run rich. Period. Economy should be 10-15 town and 12-16 highway.

In the Discovery II section read all the stickies. That will solve 75% of your problems with your truck.

On another note, could you add details of your truck to your signature please ( miles, any service you have done, and any mods you have made). This will help in the future.

Joe,
Go read my stick at the top of the D2 section on major maintances. If you want to learn what makes your truck work, do the entire list along with rebuilding/replacing the front drive shaft prior to it breaking and taking out your tranny, then go make the truck pretty,

Disco Mike have you been snooping around my desk LOL I printed that sticky and am planning on going down the list by the end of this month. I didn't pull the sticky on the drive shaft but I will. I am going to be doing my first ever oil change this weekend very excited.
