Default Defender Maximum Side Angle

Does anyone know the maximum side angle for Defender before tipping over? Went off roading yesterday with my son and we were curious. Thanks.

Instructors at LR will tell you there is no set number, but in most situations you’re ok into the 20’s and more, but you can easily roll even at 20 if you do something wrong with the wheel, throttle, or brakes.

I think the published number is 45 deg.

My backside starts to pucker at 20 degrees and I take action to reduce before I reach 25 degrees. I have been as high as 30 ... not happily.

The vehicle wants to be at the bottom of hill -- either by rolling or more likely sliding down on its four wheels -- as the tires generate force longitudinally, not transversely. This will be an uncontrolled slide or roll. Not good.

Countering this desire with throttle, speed and or steering angle may roll the vehicle, particularly if you attempt to use momentum to steer and roll forward from pointing upward to pointing back down the hill or aggressively placing the nose up the hill (thereby spinning the front wheels, digging in and tilting the vehicle further downward).

Backing out as you came is the approach most likely to work. Slow as possible wins the race ......

See action at 41 seconds into the video.

Too much reliance on momentum and speed ... then turning the wheel down then up the hill (creating angular momentum to roll the vehicle). Not good.

Angular momentum transversely around the center of mass of the vehicle rolls the vehicle -- is not directly dependent on the angle of the hill.

When the forward momentum turns into angular rotational momentum (stored then given out by the compression of the springs), the party is over. He should have backed off slowly all the way down and given up....

I am glad no one was hurt in either event.

Bumping old thread.

Anyone know the official side slope angle for the 110? I’ve tried researching but nothing specific from Land Rover site.

I ask because today I literally slipped into a pool of water when I pulled off the road to let some cars pass unbeknownst it was several feet deep. My slope said 11 degrees but it felt far more than that and the truck felt like it was about to flip.

Anyway I had some help to tow me out without tipping using the rear tow hook to keep it secure.

I honestly don’t know my confidence level. And if I was really only at 11 degrees and could push 40 plus, doesn’t seem plausible.

Did you try to drive it out or just go the route you did? Not judging at all, just curios.

The maximum side slope is specified as 45°.
