thinking of installing the factory expedition roof rack to my d90. Is it a reasonably simple plug and play task? No drilling, no trimming, no removing of parts and such? Just bolt on?
Also, anyone has the "aftermarket" expedition rack that looks identical to the factory one but 1/3 of the price?
in my research so far, the Expedition rack from the factory is about the same price as others. I've not found a less expensive one, and honestly with the weight you might want to put one on a cheap one might decide to separate from your car in an emergency situation. I have found some that can be 'optioned up' like https://www.frontrunneroutfitters.co...ii-rr-kit.html where it can have rails and stuff added to it to make it a 'tray' more than a rack, think that the expedition is just a tray (i have not seen one in person)
Also, before you give up on the Expedition, at least my dealer gives me 10% off on any accessory since I bought the car from them, on that price of thing that's not insignificant.

I prefer the design language of the expedition rack as it's cohesive to the rest of the vehicle. The other aftermarket ones though more functional are too traditional rugged looking which aesthetically is more compatible with the classic defender in my opinion.
I just had the factory one put on. It only took them an hour, and it was all bolt on. It is very sturdy, and pretty sleek. I looked at a lot of aftermarket ones, but as someone else mentioned, they just don’t look cohesive on this vehicle.
If it is just for looks the factory one very nice but it was hard to fit all the things I needed and finding the T bolts was not easy but it has been done. Now if you need the T bolts they can be had on etrailer.com. If I had to do it again I would go with the front runner one as all accessories would fit so much easier.

Thanks for the info. Do you mind sharing where you got the spare tire carrier and how is it attached to the rack?
it took a while to get find out what fits but now we know. I hope this helps if you have any questions just let me know? Next project will be the bull bar that just shipped out of South Africa, after that will be the lights all around and the last thing I think will be the limb risers. All have lock nuts the Roam case also has a new locking system from Deny locks that I really like better than what I had before in the picture but you have to drill all the way through the rack. I have the owner of Deny locks do it for me as we where in Texas by there facility.
