1500 labor
1700 differential shipped from the UK with no core return required
400 dealership lubricant
600 differential control module
300 programming (before I learned to do it myself)
probably all in 5k and well worth it. This was 2 years ago...so parts prices have risen.
everyone TAlking about prices but the cheapest new defender in the conus is 68k, lol, if 5k is that big of a deal the Ford maverick or a rav 4 Toyota starts at 20-30k. We all want nice high end luxury suvs that can go anywhere. Price really isn’t an option if you’re driving a 2020 and up defender.

So with pandemic shortages this is a very viable option for those who want to buy now and not wait years on ordering or be screwed from the factory. Every single part can be added after purchase short of different engine and driveline configurations. A majority of defenders on the market are above 75k. This is a viable option if your spending that much on a luxury statement suv.

I lived with this same regret for nearly a decade on my 2011 LR4. I was misinformed at purchase, as I was new to electronic 4WD and incorrectly believed I was purchasing the vehicle with the locking rear differential. I soon found the limits of the design and got stuck a bit more than I expected and desired (and yes, I was out there in the mud and sand finding the limits -- not good not bad, just the reality of how I used the vehicle). If one does not need the rear locker than yes, both the LR4 and new Defender remain wonderfully capable and enjoyable.
There was no viable conversion option for the LR4, until recently, since its rear differential is larger than that of the LR3 (to handle more power from the larger V8 engine) and no aftermarket makers were sprinting to provide an air locker for the LR4 in addition to the LR3 -- and no one readily stepped up with the electronic capability to provide the conversion service.
When I bought a newer, used LR4, I was very fortunate to purchase one with a locking rear diff. (they are kin to hens teeth) -- and of course with the 2020 Defender I ordered the eDiff right up front.
With the new Defender, an air locker cannot possibly approximate the performance of the rear eDiff, so the method described here is the only way to go to convert.
Enjoy !
