I haven't towed anything with my Defender yet (have a pickup for that task), but I'm sorely tempted to hook up a trailer just for the photo op!! Maybe our camping/canoe trailer.
I am an east-coaster but in 2014 I rented a 2-door Wrangler Sport at the end of a biz trip and stayed 4 extra days so I could explore the Mojave, Anza Borrega, Salton Sea, Ocotillo Wells, Josh Tree (snuck in by accident on a long rocky trail I took out of Thousand Palms or Indio or one of those) and lots of abandoned mine "roads". Had a blast. I'm a fool for the desert, any desert. Thanks for sharing.
Sorry to pollute a Defender thread with Jeep pics!
@imager993 - Love the "Kentucky Pinstripes" on the Defender! (Thinking someone should post something on buffing them out...) Anyway, really intrigued with the Turtleback. Did you find it for sale or did you order it? If ordered, when did you place the order and how long did it take? Thanks in advance for the reply.
Thanks! I did a ceramic coat on the truck right after I got it, so those pinstripes thankfully washed away with the dirt. Only maybe 5% is still there. I'm sure it will build up over time with all the back desert road driving I do, but that's part of the natural patina of the truck.
The Turtleback is great! Bought it new at the beginning of COVID because I knew we'd be using it a bunch while other forms of travel were off the table for everybody for a while. At the time there was a six week wait time for new orders. I know they are now several months out. Hit up Nate at Turtleback Nathan@turtlebacktrailers.com He's a great guy and can walk you through where their orders stand now. There are occasionally used ones that pop up as well. These are very well built, so I wouldn't have any issue buying one used. They did make some decent changes in '18 though, so it might be good to look for a more recent one.
Here is mine! I load up 4 extra wheels/tires, tools (including jack), 8 jugs of E85 jugs (not a typo), tent/chair, cooler and my CavaPoo (called Senna) with me to the track. Pic taken at NJMP, the very first day I got the Defender.
P300 and no issues getting up to 90MPH or up the hill (coming from EcoDiesel Cherokee). Towing @ 14MPG (average).
by the way, I played around with the auto reverse trailering function that day… aaand I have a huge dent in the rear quarter panel to show for it. Don’t trust the computer people, reverse your own trailer.
