Default Lift Rods

Can you install lift rods on a 2020 Defender without removing the tires? I noticed many people indicate this is a 20 minute mod but was not sure if this was with the tires removed. I'm considering installing myself but wanted to hear from people that have actually performed the install.

I did’ but I also had the car lifted in the air for easier access. Rear rods were difficult to access and it would have been easier removing rear wheels.

No need to remove wheels, raise suspension height to off road mode, that will give you some wiggle room with rear removal and install, fronts are not a problem.

Spray existing rod connection points with WD40, you will need to find the best position under the rear of the vehicle to maneuver your arms and hands that suites your build and flexibility, make sure not to break the plastic lever arm on the top end by holding firmly while prying of stock rods. Don’t forget to have a decent flashlight.

I have changed my own twice in the last two months original rods were 2” PR and experienced to much bounce in off road mode, so I swapped out to 1 1/2” JR and the ride in normal and off will give a much better ride in both modes.

Default Defender J-Rods Question

Hi! I'm helping father-in-law with his new Defender. (I own LR3s.) He had a Jeep shop put the rods in. Are the front the longer rods? He current has shorter ones up front and longer in rear. Jeep shop did not do a new height calibration after rod install. All advice would be much appreciated!

I don't remember, but the lift rods are almost the exact same length as the stock rods, so when you remove a stock rod to replace it, the proper lift rod is fairly obvious

Bumping this thread - has anyone compared Lucky8's: Proud Rhino vs Johnson Rods? Any known quality issues or a preference between the two?

One caution - when installing - don't bend the LR sensor arms too much in any direction, you can cause error codes. I damaged a height sensor changing rods... and had to get a new one (It was showing a constant "out of range" signal after changing rods causing an intermittent air suspension error).

The sensor arms can definitely take some abuse but ... I went too far trying to get a rod changed on a wet rainy day and was not really being "sympathetic" to the sensor when I ripped the rod off the height sensor arm!

A hint with lift rods is if you spray down the rubber ends with a little penetrating oil they will pop off much easer. Back on as well.

Coat with teflon so as not to corrode the rubber grommets

Or buy an IIDTool and have the same effect from inside the vehicle in 30 secs without getting your hands dirty
