Default New D90 X Dynamic P400

I just picked up my Defender 90 X Dynamic P400 and I’m loving it.

I don’t do a lot of “off roading” (I wish I could), I purchased this mainly for mountain biking with. That’s when I do the most driving these days. I’m out every weekend, summer and winter (snow). I needed/wanted a vehicle that would be great for hanging a bike off the back, gear in the back, and a sweaty muddy driver. This is replacing my diesel Discovery 5 (great utility and I will miss that fold down rear shelf). Yes I know there are many cheaper options, but I also like cool cars and living in Canada a new Defender has been forbidden fruit. It’s been on their list for decades. Plus I’m a huge Land Rover/Range Rover and British car fan (Ive owned Aston Martins, Jaguar and Lotus).

I haven’t had a lot of time to drive it as I got it yesterday and we went into lockdown today, first impressions are off the chart good. I think it’s plenty fast enough and I used to be a track rat You really do feel the short wheelbase, especially around corners; I like it. Ive heard the brakes can be grabby, but I have not felt that so far. Vision out is amazing, the space in the backseat is surprising and its a pleasant place to sit. The storage in the back is minuscule, but fine for my purposes.

Two interesting spec details. I had the stock rims painted gloss black. Even though the grey was similar to the front and rear grille/shield colour on the X Dynamic, it really doesn’t work with all the black trim. I feel the black rims tie it all together.

Here they are in black

Ive been considering swaping the tires out for BFG K02’s, but I don’t think I really need them for my driving, though they do look great. I had them on my Rubicon 2 door and I liked them.

I also went with the Dinamica interior and I love it. Especially since they have the leather style material where the standard seats have the fabric. I love alcantara interiors, and even though they bill this as their version of alcantara, its not really like alcantara, but I still love it.

I also spec’d the vehicle with a walnut finisher, I got the dark oak and I’m pleased with the mix up.

I think it’s the best option. Ive had full leather in many cars and some of them really very nicely done. Ive also had fabric seats in my 2 door Wranglers and my race cars and it really works best if you need to be stuck to the seat. My favourite interior was a car with beautiful alcantara, and while this does not come near that in terms of finish and material quality, its a great blend of the practicality you get from high quality fabric and a bit of the plushness you get from alcantara.

I use this vehicle when I head out mountains biking,m so lots of sweaty days, mud, dirt, and snow. I’ll let you know how it goes.

congrats! which bike rack/mount solution are you going with? i miss being able to load 1-2 bikes standing up inside my old LR3/LR4 for long road trips. i currently lay my bike flat with 2/3 of the rear seat folded down in my diesel D5 (since the interior isn't tall enough), but i wasn't sure how my future self would handle a bike inside a D90 (or D110 if my future self has a family). my lease isn't up for a couple years, so i have time to see what's out there...

I love my Kuat. I considered the swing out adaptor but the weight wasn’t worth it for me. With a bunch of bikes I think you would need it.

I went with the Kuat 10” long extender with the 2” offset. It works perfectly for me.

I can still open the back door, a little.

I can open more if I offset the rack down instead of up.

Even in the offset position it’s still 12” off the ground, 14” in the other position.

My last vehicle was a D5 diesel.I had the same rack on that. In fact that truck is a great MTB rig. That fold out rear shelf/tray is a great spot to sit and suit up, plus we would sit a BBQ on the bike rack in the winter and cook up some lunch when riding

Nice D90!

I just received my D90 last week as well. Mine's on the other end of the pricing/feature spectrum, but I love it, too!

Dan
