Default Odd Hesitation/surging/bucking low rpm when cold

Anyone else experienced this?

When my defender is cold, all the way up to temp, if I drive casually around 1100-1400rpm aka foot light on throttle

I get what would at first be described a sort of compressor surge. If i hold that throttle, it will go into full on bucking, almost like being in too low a gear on a manual without enough rpms.

I have not taken it to the dealer yet, as I know it will be un-reproducable for them. It has thrown no lights, it may have coded, but I have not scanned it.

It only does it when cold. I know the engine runs high compression, and Im guessing that not being up to temp is potentially causing a detonation or lack of.

Not exactly what you want to experience on a truck with less than 1k miles

I don't think I've had that ever happen and not stall afterward so I'd have to say you're seeing something different. I know for mine after one incident they did a module code update, could be you need that, however mine actually did it once since I had the code update, it was when when my son had his phone plugged in and was charging in the front usb port. Him having that plugged in was such an unusual thing that I almost had to assume there was some connection, something electrical-related. LR gremlins ... and I hear you with new vehicles it's really not something well-tolerated. I'd bring it in anyway if I were you, just so there's a history recorded, that way if it's ongoing you have something on the record, what you're describing seems like it should've logged a code anyway.

Ya, you are right. Ill make the appt. Ive just been trying to avoid a wasted trip if they cant reproduce it, or worse, it somehow being in the shop for weeks while they diagnose and track it down.

If It gets up to temp, it doesnt do it. So Im fairly certain thats what it is linked to. Which means at a minimum the trucks gonna be there overnight. Oh well.

Update, only because I think its hilarious and want a record of it. I called the dealer to discuss and make an appt. Their response "Spend some time with it, get to know it, its a very advanced vehicle, these things are expected, if you really wanna bring it in and diagnose it, it will likely be here for at least 30 days"

Rolls eyes...

P400 engine? Yeah, not normal? 5.0 V8? Yeah, not normal. I'd take it in for sure.

I have no reference on the P300.

Mine stalled again today, p300, no CEL though, so in 12 months that's about the 5th or 6th stall since I've owned it and only once did it throw the CEL but that cleared less than an hour later.

I have the service appointment tomorrow, stalling is not why I'm there though, just the annual state inspection, first scheduled maintenance and last but not least fix the clicking seats if possible is the plan.

I will see if they can at least check for a code.

Another new fun gremlin is this week the one touch up doesn't work on the driver's side window anymore. Smh.

Just got back from the state inspection. No code was logged from yesterday's stalling incident so there's nothing they can do for it at the moment. I was told to pay attention to where I buy fuel. Seat clicking was noted and now has been placed on the record as a problem but they said there's nothing they can do for it yet, they'll continue looking for recalls or other service bulletins related to it. They did the oil change and whatever other misc stuff for the first scheduled maintenance. Then on the way home I passed underneath a bridge and a rock dropped off of it and hit the windshield.

Crossing fingers that I don't have a crack. There was one Defender sitting on the lot with a cracked windshield and I was thankful it hasn't happened to me yet, then this happens, odd coincidence. I noticed the cracked one on the lot didn't have the heating elements, fwiw.

Edit... No cracks. From the looks of it just four very small chips, lucked out. Also they did fix the one-touch going up for the driver's-side window. They said something about it needing to be recalibrated.

All in all a decent visit, I was off work using a vacation day. I waited three hours while they worked on it and got to feel retired for a while watching Hota.

Mine just starting doing this recently. 2020.5 HSE. Wondering if this was something in a software update. Is fine when warmed up - but get this when cold. Sounds like a Mack Truck inside.

Mine doesnt sound like much, its just a noticeable feeling, hesitation or whatever you want to call it. I could for sure aggravate it to the point of stalling, but I couldnt forgive myself torturing it like that, for fear of detonation or similar. Id rather not have to turn a small problem into a potentially massive one and be without the vehicle in this shortage-climate for months.

I first thought it was just fuel related, so I only put 93 in it now, it doesnt matter, and when its up to temp its fine. It just HATES!!! Being cold, I am interested to see what this would mean in winter, I live in the Northeast, its winter 15 months of the year. I would hate a lesser reliable car when I need it more reliable the most. Thats my primary concern at the moment.

Although this thing is worth more than I paid for it, maybe I should just sell it profitably haha
