Default Steering wheel loose/clicking

Hello,

Anyone felt their steering wheel a little more loose/clicking while going over potholes with warmer temperatures? (>90F)

Looked under, nothing loose. Always had a bump/knock on reverse while turning right but my dealership could not reproduce/said everything was tight and well.

Thank you

Francisco

No I have not noticed or felt that. How big are the pot holes where you are at? I drive over pot holes and not through them. Temps are in the 90s.

Thank you. You are right. Over them. Regular NY sized potholes. It also happens in corrugated roads.

Could be a litany of things, which may not show with a ‘look under’. The under body shields hide a lot of suspension components and moving parts, any of which may transfer looseness/play into the steering feedback. The description of a ‘bump/knock’ in reverse leads me to look at suspension or steering rack bushings/mounts, although if someone can lend more info, there may not be a conventional steering rack as we know it, but an electrically powered hydraulic steering box. Doing more research on this, as I’m curious also. Keep us posted.

Will do. Brought it to the dealer again. Waiting for a call back. Yesterday was 103F, and definitely noticeable, i think it's a bushing somewhere: likely suspension. I had an LR3 before and a similar knock started happening before the lower control arms went.

They reported they couldn’t reproduce and looked at all the front suspension and steering parts and were OK, tightened to appropriate torque. They rotated and balanced the wheels and said if it persists to come back. I felt it again late today. Not sure how to proceed as I need the car and dealership has no loaners.

That must be so frustrating, always seems like they can’t ‘find’ the problem that is obviously there. And their attempt at a fix, rotating and balancing the tires, is a weak gesture to make the customer think they are concerned about finding the root of the problem. Based on the description of your problem, it would be a stretch to think that rotating and balancing the tires would solve anything. I’ve also been disappointed by the level of service and expertise one receives at dealerships these days. More excuses than solutions. Either the training is lacking or the talent pool out there is shrinking. Seems like good, old school mechanics are becoming extinct. Good luck in your quest for a real diagnosis and fix.

Did you ever find out what was causing your issue with the steering wheel clicking noise

Nope. Dealership was not helpful.

Well, that is not good. Did the clicking go away after the dealer visit? I would try another dealer if your current one cannot figure it out.
