Default 1990 SWB Classic

I sold my Disco and my P38. Paid some bills and had enough left to buy this fine gem....oh its so ugly. I hate the color so much I almost didn't buy it. The chrome bowling ball wheels ad insult to injury. For the cherry on top the previous owner decided to go mudding before giving it to me. I'm not sure I've ever owned a more unattractive Rover.

I really really wanted to build the P38. It was clean. The interior was nice. I loved the body style. Even the color. But I don't think it was right for what I do with my trucks. I kept picturing being out in the middle of the desert and the BCM deciding to crap out or something. Also the paint was so nice i knew id be upset if it got scratched. So I made the more logical long term decision to go back to a simple Classic.

This one is more than a bit rough. The interior is filthy. Smells like wet feet, cigarettes, crayons and old Spam. The body is decent. But I hate hate this color. I'm debating spray bombing it until I have the budget to actually paint it.

It needs head gaskets. Swivel seals and a boat load of other crap. But I got it cheap and it's rust free. Plus as an added bonus...the previous owner was the guy who I sold a ton of parts of my 89 parts car. So all those parts came right back to me . I have a truckload of spares. Plus another engine.

Here she is in all her glory...

And here is an example of a spray paint job I did on my old Cj7. This is what the Rover might get until I can afford real paint. Same color or olive green.

Well the Turd has returned. The buyer decided he really wanted my Green D1 instead. Since it really didn't matter to me, I took it back. Not sure what the hell I'm gonna do w it. I don't really have the funds to build multiple Rovers. So naturally I own 3 of them. The classic is my favorite body style but this one needs the most work.
The coolant leak seems to be fixed. Heater hose at the intake was puking everywhere. No steam cleaned pistons. No coolant leak. Compression test is next. But it may very well not need head gaskets. I have driven it a little and I can say it does drive well considering. I have it for sale. If it doesn't sell not quite sure what I'm gonna do with it.

Little updates.

I went though all the fluids. Did a full tune up and minor maintenance items. It runs and drives pretty good. It's still been for sale while I've been building but I've gotten more and more done to it because of the lack of interest. When my Disco has been annoying or side work is too frustrating. ..this truck is my go to calming vehicle. Zero stress.

In a unbelievable coincidence, the guy who bought this truck...then later wanted my Green D1, is moving. He can't take the D1 with him...so what does he do? He calls me and asks if I want it back for much less than he paid. He knows I have an addiction. So that may donate it's new radiator, fan clutch, hoses, battery, 24 spline axles, LT230, and it's wheels and tires to the Classic. This will be the 3rd time I've bought that damn truck.

Also I've been casually making the truck less horrible looking. I think it's coming out nice. Way way way better than chipping clearcoat/primer. Plus I took the drivers fender off and straightened it out quite a bit. Not perfect but much better.

I sand it by hand w 600 if the paint/clearcoat is shot like this one is. Wipe it down with acetone. Then spray using long strokes. Just like a paint gun. I prefer to use my thumbs on the can because I get better control. If I can help it I try not to overlap panels. The over spray leads to inconsistent spray patterns. I tape everything. I hate over spray. So I take my time with weather stripping door jambs etc. Just like real paint the better you prep the better it will come out.

It's not at all perfect. But from 5 feet away you can't tell. Plus once I'm done it will look way way better. If ever needs touching up I can just do it.

Small updates. Did more cosmetic stuff along with passenger side seat repair. Sanded and "painted" more of the body. Fixed the grill. Sanded the chrome bumper painted that black. Started it up for the first time in awhile. Drove it around no problem. I even got the AC working out of shear curiosity. As ugly as it is, it does run good. I still don't have all the mud cleaned out.
Finally got another set of wheels. Thank god. Those chrome ones are awful.

Next I need to decide if I'm going to officially build the truck or not. I've seriously considered going through the whole truck and making it a proper trail truck. I want to simplify the whole thing. Non-abs brakes, manual seats, etc etc. Maybe.

The paint is uneven on the hood because it's wet. It does even out when it dries.
