Aaaaaaaaand we’re back to it being a POS.

The day started as a good Disco day, and turned bad on the test drive. Got the diff fluid changed- easy peasy. Sucked out the power steering fluid from the reservoir and it wasn’t too burned, so I didn’t do a full flush, but both of those went well. I also crawled underneath to look at the connectors on the tranny and t case. I found a 2 blade sensor with a plug undone and plugged it back in thinking this could be the source of my P0501.

Well, despite putting a brand new MAF in, now I’m getting P0102 P1884. It doesn’t even see a MAF there and the UG just shows “err” for the economy stuff.

Can NOTHING be straight forward in these stupid things?!?!?!??!?!?! This keeps up, I’m going to change the title of the thread to “Discovering Discos ARE junk after all”. I truly love driving it and it’s a lot of fun, but the amount of work it takes to make one correct is absurd.

Whatever, now I get to trace more wires, clean connectors and figure out WTF is causing this. I wouldn’t be as bummed if my nice car wasn’t going to take probably a few months to get fixed. This is pathetic.

Since it's now the daily, those codes don't risk the vehicle. Just don't look at the dash and enjoy lol. Seriously though, between my two I don't have any of these issues.

After spending 5+ hours mowing the property today, I took a few minutes on the Disco. Brand new MAF is useless. Cleaned the old one and put it back in and no codes. But oh yes, the P0501 came back. I’ll look into that switch that was unplugged and probably get one of those as I bet that’s it. POS

Regardless if I’m pissed at the Disco for various reasons, I knock stuff out from time to time as I have time to get things done. I decided to tackle a few things yesterday:
- take out the (what I thought to be) faux wood in the center console
- put the new gaiters in for the transfer case and e brake
- see if in fact the heated seat plugs were there

First, I learned something: that center console piece is in fact REAL wood. I was dumbfounded given the absolutely pathetic quality of plastic and other materials elsewhere.

I am absolutely horrible at doing the gaiter stuff, but it’s definitely better than it was before.

The end result is much better in my opinion.

It’s not perfect, but as the leather gets a bit more pliable, I’ll get it to fit better for the e brake. I also very much prefer the rubber mat. Oh yeah, cleaning the 18 years of grime and such was as gross as you might think.

I’m getting close to being done in the interior as I fixed the ask tray and coin holders, replaced the blank with the cup holders under the HVAC unit, and replaced all the bulbs in the HVAC unit. The last big ticket item will be a non warped dash. With that and a modern head unit, the interior will be darn close.

I’m about to head out for a bit, and I’ll also confirm the heated seats work. The lights came on yesterday, so here’s to hoping something will be straightforward…

Stay with it. You'll get there.

My vibration in the front end? Drive shaft. I’m so dumb sometimes.

A Rover buddy local who went huge on his lift had a full serviceable driveshaft for normal height machines and gave it to me for a 24 pack. Sorted everything out and it’s perfect now.

I did a tranny service too. I was holding my breath as I thought it could be the issue and although the fluid was a little burned and there was some gunk on the magnet, nothing to get riled up about.

So current status is, it’s ready for mild DD duty. And since the boss’ L320 is being stupid, she’ll be driving it for a bit as the dealer tries to figure out how stupid they are. This is good because she is quite picky as I’ve polluted her into being terrified of any noise or anything strange, which she’ll report back. Next up is sort the amigos, which I know what it is, and then brakes within the next 1k miles. After that will be to get the AC sorted.

Once I get all that little stuff done, it’s going to be back to finishing up cosmetic stuff, and then before winter will be the lift and tires. Last step will be to save for the rack and we’ll be to fully functional status. I’m kind of excited as today was a good Rover day.

Oh yeah, why this is all taking so long. Life in the mountains. After that storm where we got 18” a couple weeks ago, we got another few inches a few days later. Hopefully we’ll be done with snow for a bit- or at least until we get the barn done.

Anyway, the tranny didn’t look end of the world- no chunks.

Oh yeah, lastly on the good news front, I finally registered it too. So it’s more or less oh fish eey’all now to be used.
My transmission pan looked about like that too. I was thinking it looked pretty bad and I came away thinking a transmission change was in the near future. Is it normal that the magnets look all chia let like that?

I’ve done a tranny service on all 3 D2s I’ve had. This one was probably the worst, but it has shifted fine- probably a scoshe better than before the service. I’ll probably do another one next year and see. Assuming you’re not slipping in gears or the like, I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Well, I’ve not updated in a bit as I’ve been really busy with all manner of stuff in life, but am still around.

I’m posting due to some excitement for me in keeping the ball rolling: I’ll be picking up a parts car tomorrow! It’s another ‘04, and the poor guy just had the cats stolen and didn’t have the space or heart to keep fighting against the losers of the world. It’s a great spec SE7 with rear AC and some other nice bits. I’ll be pilfering a good bit to get the HSE to a really good place, but it’s actually nice enough to be worth saving, so after I get everything for the HSE sorted, I may save this one.

The best part is it’s my dream D2 color in being Giverny. Frame is perfect, which is most important, but the driver’s fender is pretty dinged. Otherwise it’s straight and all there. The hood and roof paint are done, but if it’s a long term project, it will be worth getting that redone. It’s also about 10k miles fewer than the HSE so that’s good too. If I decide not to save it, then I’ll pull the engine and focus on a rebuild for the HSE. Having a spare tranny and T case won’t hurt my feelings either (and diffs for that matter).

Nice score. When opportunity knocks it is great to be able to answer.

A good part of the decision was based on this will give me all that I need and more (save the dash) to finish the HSE all for less than buying those parts individually. As we are still very tight on money with having the barn built, it was nice to scrape some pennies to get this. I’ll get some pics up tomorrow.

The main parts I’ll be pilfering:
- Brakes
- wheels and tires (still red to refinish the HSE wheels
- possibly suspension
- SAI pump
- Driver’s door lock actuator
- Passenger front window regulator
- A Pilar trim
- Possibly rear driveshaft
- front heated windshield button (sadly the original heated one was replaced some time back)

There are a bunch of other little things and a few surprises that I’ll show once I pick it up.
