While my Florida Land Rover Club buddies were at the spring rally, I set out to address a "clunk" noise that occured when turning side to side

Roof rack removed, cleaned and prepped for surgery

I had no history on the wheel bearings so they were first on my list

Going in

Come to find out the passenger side CV splines and drive flange were extremely worn (will add pic)

Both half shafts and driver's side CV looked good

Sitting, waiting for parts

Went with a set of used CV axles and drive flanges from Paul Grant

I also decided to rebuild the swivel ***** since I was in this far

Fender removed for snorkel install

Inner seal was leaking

Bench reset for the rebuild

Took a chance on the Britpart kit from Lucky 8

Teflon ***** were in great condition

Bottom race was easy enough

This one required some effort

No more grey diff oill

Painted the housing & stub axle

Salvaging my worn CV to seat the bearing

Pressing it past the thrust ring

Assembled with preload set

Installed

Shiny

Bearings were next

Went with the RTC3511 per the consensus

Driver's side complete!

After doing the driver's side this one me took 1/2 as long

Clever trick for these bolts, 12pt ratcheting Gearwrench is key

Down

Clean and waiting

Keeping the old parts close by

Driving out the races

Pretty much a pro at this point

Backyard spray booth

Rustoleoum gloss black

Home stretch

My "new" CV in much better condition

Fresh bearings

Job done

Nicely done. Quick question, does the front diff need to be drained? In other words, does the gear oil flow up into the axle tubes?

Love this build. Pretty cool that you have a rarity and you still drive/wheel it.

Thanks Walt, yes the front diff needs to be drained, the shiny collar on the half shaft (behind the CV) rides in the swivel ball seal preventing the gear oil and one shot grease from mixing.

Apparently some people leave that seal out and allow the gear oil to lubricate the swivel ***** / bearings but I chose to rebuild according to spec

Thanks Shift! Your black D1 was a thing of beauty.

If the truck was all original when I got it then I wouldn't dream of hacking it up (not that I could afford to)

But since it was already used and abused I figured just keeping it running and on the trail was doing her justice.

During the front end service I mocked up the used Mantec I got from Joe!

Found the template online somewhere, possibly DiscoWeb?

After a few progressive cuts I got a nice shape

I also swapped out a rusty wheel with one of the donor rims

Obviously I couldn't install my new snorkel over this faded A pillar

And fishEh inspired me to paint my inner fenders sooo....

Taped up

Refreshed A Pillar

Mud / water protection

Which led to treating the rust below the brake master

Enhance

Treated

From below

Prepped

Apparently I didn't take pics after painting the wheel well so will update later...
