Default Land Rover Defender to be replaced in 2013

Topspeed has an article regarding the replacement of the Land Rover Defender, due to replace in 2013.

"First launched in 1948, the iconic Land Rover Defender will be replaced in 2013. Initially known as the Land Rover Series I, the iconic SUV adopted the "Defender" name in 1990 as a measure to distinguish the utility Land Rover model from the Discovery and Range Rover..."

I am looking forward what they come up with. I just hope that it will not differ too much from existing one. SUVs are worthless and last thing we need is yet another one. Even Land Rover have enough already.

Another legend to be killed by politics?

it was far from true because was not official, it was only illustration. Visually was mix of Iveco Massif and some Nisan Patrol

I hope they introduce the replacement to the US. I really do miss the defender and would probably own one if they were more readily available at a more practical price (20k for a 1996 is pretty high). I love the defender as it is, but it really is not a very "practical" vehicle as an every day driver/commuter. If they made a more civilized version that did not compromise utility and improved ergonomics, that would be great. I don't understand the point in getting rid of the name though, why not just call it the 2013 Defender? I believe they are doing this because the UK is switching from the Defender to a more bullet proof military transport. I think Land Rover is now turning to the civilian market to keep it alive.

the high price is i think given by how rare it is and how valuable it is for the owners. here are cars 1996-2004 also almost same price (based on condition and edition) and rare on used market. users tend to keep them.
LR already makes enough civilized SUVs, it would be shame if Defender would steer away from that tradition. aside from that it is quite big, it is very good commuter car in my opinion. it even accelerates to that 140-150km/h quite fast. no problem for daily driver on autobahn here. sure they will need to tweak it a bit to meet new safety standards etc, but that can be done smart.
i would welcome lower price than current one or keep same price with planetary gears to rise ground clearance while keeping height.
