1998 D1 - ordering parts...
Out of my element in helping my neighbor with his newly acquired 1998 D1. The question is when ordering parts, would it be best to enter 1997 as the model year? Seems to be confusing since 1998 had both D1 and D2 model years and I noticed some sites do not differentiate. I just dont know if a 97 and 98 are different enough to be a concern. 4.0 Gems engine, FYI.
On a side note, its a pretty neat D1 that when closed up looks great. Open a door and you could pass a baseball through many of the rust ports on the upper sills. Was a dealer loaner until the PO bought it, so sorta a single owner. Engine was replaced at 40k under warranty with total milage now at 130k. Red sorta color.

Rioja Red probably, all depends on what parts you are ordering. 96-97 are non AEL, while 97-99 are equipped with AEL. O2 Sensors, and fuel pumps are different as well as some emission parts. All other parts from 96-99 GEMS D1 should be the same. 99 was the split year with 99 D1/99 D2"s on the lot at the same time. Just like 95 had the 95 RRC & the 95 P38 out at the same time (fall of the previous year at the absolute earliest).
