Default 96 Disco 1 Intermittently Not Going in Reverse

My 96 Disco 1 has just started intermittently not going in reverse. I turn the ignition on/off several times and move the shift lever and it finally shifts to reverse.

Now, the key will not come out of the ignition and the ABS light just came on.

Could this be the starter?

Thanks.

Kurt

What? The starter has nothing to do with your issues.
Ontop of the gear shift is a trim piece, pop that off and tighten the nut inside there.
Problem's solved.

The ABS light is unrelated to the other issues.
Go to the Tech Section and start reading.
It is at the top of the DI page.

Why is the key stuck in the ignition?

Trust me, tighten the nut in the gear shift **** and the key will come right out.

Your transmission is not all the way in park so the key will not come out, it looks like its in park, but its not.
Same thing with reverse, you are not actually in reverse, looks like it, but you're not.
The shift cable is out of adjustment, tighten that nut and you will be good to go.

Spike's talking about the trim piece on top of the shift lever, did you pop that off?

OK. So I took the trim piece off the shift **** and tightened the nut. The key finally came our however, it still will not go in reverse.

At this point, how do I even have it towed?

Will it go into any gear at all?
