Am I crazy?
 

Looking at buying a 1999 or 2000 Land Rover Discovery to replace my 200k+ miles Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Heard a lot of different things about LRs, so wanted opinions. Not looking at making my car my hobby, but want a solid car for occasional off roading but also a nice road car.

Thoughts?

Well, if you are, then I guess everyone else here is too. It helps if you are mechanically inclined. Otherwise, plan on spending money on labor to keep it up. If you can do the work yourself, then it's not too bad. In fact, I think they are pretty easy to work on compared to some of the other vehicles I've had. Probably a few more problems than your Jeep Cherokee will experience, but arguably more capable, definitely roomier/more comfortable, and you won't be driving 'just another Cherokee'. Try to find one that the head gaskets have already been done; even so, not a hard job in itself if you have to do it on your own. Go for it.

I will elaborate to not seem like an ass, these can be finiky, usually bought new by yuppies then neglected
Expect to do head gaskets, brakes, wheel bearings, all fluids, radiator, hoses, tune up, sensors, fuel pump , the list goes on

These are usuasly neglected and wore out which = unreliable

Once you redo it great vehicle so either you spend money or work on it
