Default brake lights/How to get tail light assembly out

Working on a '96 Discovery. I've only had it for a few weeks, and haven't seen any brake lights. So which lens are they supposed to use? I'm guessing the upper lenses, although I see the two lower ones in the bumper have both an amber and red lens. I'm also assuming that the brakes actually use the upper lenses. And even if they don't, how do I get the upper lenses to come out?

You need to download the RAVE manual, there are links to it in various members signatures, in the RAVE is the workshop manual, electrical manuals and the owners manual.

It's a painintheass!!!! Especially if you have jump seats. Have fun!
And to add something productive, have a test light handy and a helper to step on the pedal. The contact points in the light sockets and in the tail light housing loose connectivity as corrosion builds up on them. I've used a gentle application of sand paper to clean them before, some electrical grease when you're done and closing it all back up. Taking it apart just takes investigation and patience.

(rave manual is in my sig line.) Cheers.

There's an access panel on the sides of the jump seats (if you have them) towards the rear of the truck. Once you get them off, reach in and remove one nut on top and one underneath that hold down two "u" clamps or bars. These bars hold the light assembly to the body. Once you remove the bars, the lens assembly should come out with a little coaxing. You'll have the inner seal/boot to deal with, so try not to damage it. Reverse the procedure to re-install (harder to do - at least to me). Don't forget to re-connect the harness.

Just got done taking the driver's side lens out, only to find that the bulb looks good but I don't have 12 volts anywhere. Glad I found out before attempting the passenger side.

Wonder what the guy who designed this was thinking? Maybe he was a product of the 60's, like me.

Look underneath the drivers side of the dash, you will see a switch near the brake pedal, make sure the little plunger comes out when you depress the brake pedal, I've seen these switches go bad where the plunger will stick in. (I've also seen the switch go bad where no current passes through them so since you obviously know how to check electrical things (from your most recent post))
