Default California Emissions - Evaporative Controls = Failure

Hey Hey -

Well I've been searching all over the forum for leads and not finding much in regards to the issue -
I recently purchased this 94 Diso I and after resolving an oil light isse - Swapped out Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch - Added Royal Purple 15w40 Full Synth Oil -
So by California Law I have to have her smog'd before the registration is complete-
Wife took her to the smog place after the DMV and she failed with the following "Fuel Evaporative Control" test.
The vehicle runs great idles well - I don't smell gas when I've been driving her, nor when I was working on her. No Check Engine or Service Engine lights.

Questions.
1. Is the canister a part of this test?
2. Could the canister be the culprit/cause?
3. Is this just a matter of following the fuel evap lines from the filler tube to the charcoal canister and checking for leaks?

Any input is highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
In Peace and Agape,
Trav...

Are they talking advanced evap loss system or just the normal evap loss system?

I thought advanced evap was '97 and later...his is a '94(assuming that is the vehicle he is referring to.

It's the standard evap loss system - based on a couple of descriptions the Advanced system has a squared charcoal collector and my 1994 has a cylander shaped collector.

I wasn't there, so I didn't see exactly how they do the test - So I don't know if they hooked up some kind of pressure system to the tank - Wife said the guy mentioned the need for a new gas cap.

Any input is appreciated,

You are right he did, but I wanted to make sure the test guys were not saying his AEVAP was bad.

Replace your gas cap and then see what they say I guess, I have no idea as I dont live in a state that has emissions testing.
I can drive around with my check engine light on forever if I want too.

More Information -
Ok so I've been reading reading reading - It would seem the test is done by applying low pressure to the fuel tank/evap system and then measure for the leakage rate. If above a certain number it is a fail -

The question I have now:
Besides the hoses the run through the evap system are there any other possible pressure leakage points?
Should I check the fuel pump mounting for possible leaks? Not sure where that is, but will find it.

Thanks for any advice...

I would think any leakage from the tank could be responsible, start by replacing the cap. I would remove the little black panel in the rear floorpan and take a look, also get underneath with a good light and check out the fuel lines and the filler tube. Those filler tubes do eventually crack and leak. I had to change mine.

Did the 94 have the gas tank recall like the 97 did? You could possibly have a cracked fuel tank. Lots of potential leakage points.
