Default Clunk when shifting into reverse.

The truck has been doing this for a while so I thought I would get your opinions on this issue. When shifting into gear I usually get a slight noise but I never thought anything of it. It seems to be much louder when going from D to R. It doesn't always do it but I would say it does more often than not. Drive shafts have been well greased with Mobil 1 Synthetic grease since I have owned the truck and there does not appear to be any slack that I can detect in any of the U-joints or shafts. Is this normal or is there something else I should be looking at?

When was the last time you changed your T/C and tranny fluid?

T/C fluid and diff fluids were changed within the last 8k with Mobil1 fluid. Haven't changed the trans fluid since owning the truck. Its on the to do list. 99% sure the clunk is not coming from the tranny.

Do you still have the rotoflex joint? There was a thread yesterday regarding clunking and prop shafts, I think, specific to your issue.

No rotoflex joints. U-joints with the 4 bolt pinion flanges. Ive always assumed it was just slack in the drive line but I don't want to suffer some major problem because of an assumption.

It's probably just slack in the t case its pretty common, some have luck quieting it a little with heavier t case oil.

Can be slack in t/case, kind of normal and you may need to replace all your u-joints especially if they haven't been lubed at least twice a year.

Default Clunk

Mine has been doing just that since new...
The stealership told me Blah! Blah! Blah! and that it was normal (add you sarcasm at will) and they all did it.
The clunk never got worse but it's still annoying
It's worse when the brakes are not applied and nearly gone with the parking brake applied.
If I use the engine for braking (3 or lower) in a downhill and then shift to D, there is the clunk... so first I shift from 3 to N and then to D
So... In my case it's nothing to worry about, as long as I apply the brakes before shifting to R and even D ie: if i'm in neutral at the stop light I need to apply the brakes before shifting.
If I lift one tire, I can rotate it 1/8 of a turn and reproduce the clunk.
I'm not worried about it, just a bit embarrassed.
