Default Convert Disco I to elec. fan

Has anybody just got rid of the clutch/fan assbly on a Discovery I and went to a Spal 16" puller? Less wear on the pump maybe 1 more HP : )

I have not but am seriously interested in converting mine for water crossing purposes. Spring thaw in the rockies means all those creeks become small rivers.

karhawk, have you tried doing a search in the forums on this? It has been discussed greatly in the past.

The biggest benefit would probably be a few more mpg. When my clutch was bad I was getting 15-16, now high 14s tops

So...when the fan clutch was bad you were getting better mileage then after you replaced it? Or did you put the numbers backwards?

I had the same issue only with different mpg numbers.

If the clutch goes bad and goes "loose" like mine did all it does is freewheel and does nothing to cool the engine.
It still turns from the friction of the water pump shaft but causes no drag on the engine and no cooling.

I drove a year with no working clutch fan and never knew it, the only problem I had was while offroading in Aug with the a/c on and climbing big sand hills the engine would heat up.
Turn the a/c off and it cooled back down.
Thats how I finally figured it out.
