Hello I am very new to this... Here is my problem. I took my 97 disco 1 threw the carwash running and it died half way threw it. I pushed it out of the way and now I have to turn the key to start position 3 to 4 times before it will crank. It also does not start just cranks. If I put it in neutral it will crank on the first turn but not start. thanks

 

Let it dry out and see what happens. You could have gotten water in some electrical connections. I would start by checking the coil wire to make sure it isn't grounding out or wet. Also take off the distributor cap to make sure all is dry inside there as well. It sounds like once its running again you should spend some quality time with some dielectric grease under the hood.

 

I'm not sure that the 97 has a distributor, but Moss has the right idea. Some carwashes have the undercarriage spray that can get up in the engine compartment. If you had a loose connection before on say, the coilpack it might cause the engine to quit.

What does it do when you crank it? Does it crank easily? Are you getting back-fires as you try to start it? Maybe some water got into the air intake? Open your airbox and see if it is soaked. Also check things like the MAF sensor to see if it's wet or if water made it into the plenem.

Don't crank it for very long though. You can burn out your catalytic converters if you pump too much unburned fuel through the system and when you DO get it started let it run at idle and get to temp for a bit.

 

Hi thanks for the reply, I had it towed home and its been sitting for over 24 hours and it still has the same issues. I have the coil pack system.

 

Yes it cranks easily, Only I have to turn the key to start several times before it will crank. Never done this before

 

Keep us posted after you have dried it out. I am still relatively new to Land Rovers (but I am in love) and would love to hear what the issue ended up being.

 

Your ECU got water inside it.
Passenger fender, black box, unhook the battery, remove ECU, open it, dump the water out, dry it, seal with marine grade silicone, put it back, done.
This is common with these trucks, more so the older and rustier they get.

 

Actually it's under a black plastic cover, it's an aluminum housing with stainless type covers. Two covers, one on each side. I believe they use torx head screws so you'll need that size and type of bit.

Prop open the hood while your drying engine bay out......
