Disco I Ownership Thread
A few weeks ago I purchased a 1996 Discovery I SE. It has just over 156K miles on it and several issues, which I guess is normal. This thread will serve as a restoration thread as well as a general guide for what ownership for these vehicles can look like. I have a similar thread going for my M5 on another thread and people seem to like it. So here it goes!
Oil Change 15 December 18, 157,302 Miles Reason: Unknown when last oil change was and very low oil level Cost: $50-$75 Things You Will Need:
Step 1: Get Under the Truck and Prepare the Engine

Terrific. Another Discovery revived. I use Napa/Wix 1515 and Shell Rotella for oil/filters.
Take a look at this thread for lots of useful "how to's" and common problems. https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...02/#post186769 Grab the workshop manuals from the link in my signature. Welcome to the party! |
This is actually an extremely helpful visual approach at helping/learning to change the oil.
This will also be most helpful to newer owners/users in the future. :) |
I spent a lot of time over the holidays doing a little bit to the Disco here and there and finally have the time to update this post. Unfortunately the truck has mostly sat since I bought it due to a few headaches that will be detailed below, but nothing terrible.
Thermostat Change/Coolant Drain, Fill, & Bleed 30 December 18, 157,302 Miles Reason: Engine not coming up to temp and heater not blowing hot air. Cost: $25-$75 Things You Will Need:
Step 5: Fill Cooling System With New Fluid and Burp/Bleed the System
Step 5.5: Fixing a Broken Fill Plug

What kind of cap is that on your new overflow tank?
It looks to be connected to something else? Thanks |

Auhh that’s interesting. So one would get an alert when fluid was low?

Thank you OverRover!
Now I am even more curious as to how I would make the electrical connection? Thanks |

You got a sweet looking truck no doubt. I believe I had been eye balling this same truck as it was posted on craigslist in the Cincinnati area for awhile. I hope it brings years of joy to you.
|
Liking this thread. I should have posted something similar when i replaced my hoses and spark plugs. Next time.

Nice.
I was in Cincinnati, Ohio. Now I am in Toronto, Canada. I'll start a new thread pertaining to the coolant cap as not hijack your thread. :) |
Here's a useful tip...
Pulling the bottom radiator hose can make an unholy and hazardous mess. Get 4 feet of 5/8" OD hose and siphon the coolant out of the top of the radiator. That will get you well below the thermostat. If you need to drain the entire system then pull the bottom rad hose. I use a brass fill plug to avoid the situation you encountered with the plastic version. These trucks are all now officially 'old' and all rubber and plastic is brittle. |
Walt How much to siphon out of the rad? What is OD? thanks |

If you are just doing a thermostat, removing one gallon would be plenty.
|
Yep. Just the thermostat. It’s the next item on my list. Dont know that i need to but why not, i have it and it couldnt hurt i suppose. I have a few preventative items I would like to replace. |
Regarding the original oil filter being screwed on so tight... whomever it was, was probably thinking that screwing it on would stop the drip that appears on the end of the oil filter.
It has to do with the oil pressure relief valve o-ring. When it goes, it leaks and appears on the filter. |
