disco transfer issue
After wondering why my tires were rapidly disappearing (less than 6-7000k over half worn) I fitted freewheeling hubs to my disco (landcruiser diffs), and when in open center diff position, i still had drive, hmmm, center diff toast?? well xmas trip 1 weeks worth of driving later, I decided today to investigate what the issue was, pulled the transfer case off the back of the gear box and stripped, the center diff, is well, knackered, and thinking back has been since I got it, it used to "bang" when turning tight corners, but never had any drive issues or transfer slipping so to speak. so never bothered to look further. i did change the oil prior to trip and got a couple of little fragments of metal, but no filings in the oil and the oil was still clear. so ran with it.

I discovered that if you remove the brake drum and backing plate you can remove the transfer with out dropping the cross member and the lh transfer mount. makes it a bit less labour intensive, Pedronz |

Try to get a newer t/case because those made thru part of the 96 run had both bearing issues as well as lubricating issue which were eventually corrected.

got a replacement late 96 transfer from a diesel disco, seems smooth and quiet, will strip to clean inspect and reseal to try to eliminate oil leaks.

Did you verify the ratio is the same from a diesel? I don't know off the top of my head, but if it is you may want to change the speedometer drive gear.

Finally got the thing back together tonight, i am using a '96 transfer on the '94 disco, and discovered the input shafts from the auto to transfer are different, the '96 input shaft spline is approx 15mm longer (up the shaft) than the '94, shaft is same length, so that set me back a few days waiting for seals etc to get a new shaft all fitted,
fired it up and back out of the shed and no loud clunk or bangs so seems to have sorted that issue, may be my imagination but it seems to free wheel easier when driving and less tire scrubbing noise when doing a u turn.!!!! so off 4wding tomorrow so a decent test for noise, leaks and other issues, and now looking up at the motor, head gaskets may be next week :( both are weeping coolant thru the underside of the head....... bloody landrovers..... well it drives a bit different i think, is quieter when turning corners probably due to the fact the wheels are not trying to rip up the road surface!!! apart from that. there is no real change, apart from the smell of coolant...........

nope headgaskets....... gotta set of heads that have been ported and got big valves, and i mean big valves....... might just have to fit those.. Pedronz |
