Default Distributor Q's

So I cracked the hood again and got back to trying to figure out what the heck is up with my disco (old thread). I've been looking at the distributor. When it first stopped running this what I found.

One of the screws on the vacuum advance was missing and the unit was sticking out a little farther than in the photo. So today I tried to see if it had any suction but couldn't really notice any, nor did i see any movement while sucking on the advance vacuum hose. I want to look a little farther into the distributor to see if all the springs are still attached but I need to pick up some circlip pliers before work. I have the next couple days off and no other projects. I remember the lady I bought it from saying the timing was a little off. I never noticed it running poorly but I guess I had nothing to base that on. It appears someone recently replaced the water pump so I think they may have removed the distributor and reinstalled it poorly. I don't really have the correct tools to find the exact TDC but I can tell the piston is closest to the plug hole that the distributor's rotor is pointing. Would a bad vacuum advance cause my LR not to start? could they have done something odd to try and use the vacuum advance to compensate for the bad timing? Thanks for your time any advice appreciated!

it won't affect it starting being broke, but if it was sticking out it may be advancing the timing way too far.

PT Schram has the vacuum advance units for around $40 or so.

Default sucks

it'll run like crap at all rpm's and cause a few codes to pop up... $40 for a new one is a great deal!

Antichrist- Thanks for the info I'll message him tomorrow and see about the advance units

Cosmic88- Your write is great I was using that to help in taking out the advance

Tweak- I'm kinda wondering if they pulled out the unit a little to get the timing to work. Then I messed it
Up by putting it back in place. I'll have time tomorrow to mess with some of this stuff.

Oops, seems I got my wires crossed, or at least two if his posts. I have no idea now what he mentioned was $40 LOL.
But here's a link to one of his posts about them.
