Not as much this as the previous money spent on wrong diagnosis...and frustrations. These need to be taken to a specialist....most mechanics are shooting in the dark with the English Rovers....and they take a long time shooting...and consequent run up in hourly. Main thing that frustrates me was being told they can do it...and they find they can't.

I hear this a lot about mechanics. They seems to think the Rovers are exotic machines to be feared when in fact it's a GM engine with a Lucas ignition system. They have the same components and sensors as every other vehicle of its time. These don't even have SAI or ACE like the D2s. Newer econoboxes are much more complicated than these beasts. Ohwell. It's not your fault. Good luck.

Take them to small claims court.

Sorry to hear of your problems. It is sort of like paying tuition though you do not get a certificate. Consider it an educational expense.

You may be able to write off the losses on your income taxes, consult your accountant.

Is there supposed to be a gap or did he really have a broken off tooth?

see pix - there is supposed to be a gap, but you could also have a tooth knocked off or bent. Would seem that a skilled welder could put one back, the issue is spacing left to right, but these are punched metal, the tab is just bent up from a 3 sided hole. So if you could put one in there lined up correctly, might could do this in the truck. See attached drawing.

Well...they must be using some pot metal in the reluctor...be nice if it were hardened steel....then would not have this problem. I have been quoted $1500 to do the job. What should I expect to pay? Mechanics seem to be the only people in business these days....doctors are quitting. What is malpractice insurance for mechanics?

It's $1500 because they have to pull the t-case and transmission to get to it. Then they are replacing the plate which isnt cheap.

This is why I suggested welding the tab back on. Whats the worst that could happen? A guy on another forum just recently did this successfully. However if it doesnt work, then you pay the big bucks and have them fix it.

On later models it is a drilled reluctor plate.

My understanding that the entire thing must be disassembled to weld it...or could JB Weld be used through the inspection portal?!!! We used JB Weld a lot on the sailboat. What is the other forum mentioned where he welded it. BTW...the mechanic said he would not weld it....

Talk to a highly skilled welder and ask them if they're up for a challenge, not a mechanic.
