Default Fly wheel tooth missing

1998 Disco.......Have misfire finally tracked down to a tooth missing on the reluctor. Had a bent crankshaft position sensor that I had replaced months ago...but it seems finally the presumed bent piece broke off..thus causing misfires.

How much should this cost to replace? Is there anything that can be done while the parts are disassembled to get at the fly wheel..or is this just a single item job?

Thanks in advance.

Right church - wrong pew

The flywheel with teeth that starter engages is not what the crank sensor triggers from. Instead, there is a drilled reluctor disc on the front side of the flywheel with pickup spots arranged at 6 degree intervals, with a space for sync trigger. The CKP sensor is basically a coil of wire with a small rod that sticks out, it must be closely spaced but not touch as things whirl by. See pix and attachment (from a D2, but very similar). Misfires after a new sensor may be related to mounting (spacers, bolts, etc.). Broken flywheel tooth could have been chewed up by starter, perhaps someone tried to crank one time with engine already running, etc. Usually the tip would fall to the bottom if broken off, it could only be involved in breaking a tooth if it travelled around the flywheel and was engaged by starter gear during starting.

Any codes that pop up?

Consider replacing the engines rear main seal and the trannys front seal while the mechanic is in there, it is not going to be cheap.
What fault code numbers do you currently have?

Also - if mechanic thinks the reluctor wheel is missing teeth, it is, there are two missing to provide a reference point, only 58 teeth. If mechanic thinks flywheel outer teeth engage crank position sensor, show him these posts... Like Mike says, your codes could point to something else.

If you are getting codes p1313 and p1314 you have an issue with a reluctor tab. If you broke one off, they can be welded back on by a professional. If you broke one off though your truck is likely not to be able to exceed 2500 RPM and would drive terribly. Even a slightly bent reluctor tab will throw codes.

Thanks...did edit original post to show reluctor in place of flywheel.

Still wondering what I ought to expect to pay to repair...good advice on seals. Would like to keep job inside of $1000. Is that a reasonable expectation?

Mechanic knows it is a tooth missing...he is a first rate Rover mech,

Thanks for the help!

So you have a broken reluctor tab, not a flywheel tooth right? That would be difficult to repair because of its placement, even though it's just a tiny square piece of metal. I guess you'd have to either take the engine, or transmission out to access it. That's time and money consuming.

Well, while they are in there can replace flex plate also, like Mike says, other things to do while it is apart. Here's a pix of the tab style reluctor ring, sorry for other newer pix.

So did this problem make you decide to list it?

Did they say a tooth is supposed to be missing or did I misunderstand something?
