Spike, do I read this correctly that this is the same procedure to replace the front main crank seal on the D2 as the D1? And the breaking the nut loose short cut works on the D2 as well?

 

Yes, the DI and DII front covers are almost identical so replacing the front main seal will be the same, I think they even use the same seal but not 100% on that.
And yes, using the starter trick to loosen the crank pulley nut can be done on anything that is low enough to the ground to allow that trick to work.
Work smarter not harder.

 

I did get around to fixing mine a few weeks ago..
And thanks to spikes advice it was simple.. might have been an hour..
Been leak free ever since...

 

Can anyone tell me what size socket the crank pulley bolt is?

 

24mm.......

 

Check your crank pulley where the seal rides to see if it's grooved. If it is your new seal will likely leak too before long. The fix is to fit a Speedi-Sleeve to the pulley.

 

Yes this is an older thread.. but im doing my front main seal this weekend and found the info in here very useful, so heres a bump!

 

Quick couple of questions about this:

1. Is the pulley the thing that has the harmonic balancer on it?

I'm going to be replacing my radiator and water pump and am thinking this would be a good time (with the extra space in there due to those parts being off) to do my front main seal. I have a leak that looks like it is coming from the front shaft seal. I put dye in the oil and looked up there with a blacklight and can see the trail of oil coming from the front crankshaft seal down to the bottom of my oil filter. I get a few drips off the filter case everytime I drive it now.

2. What do you use to drive the seal in once the old one is out?

Decided to tackle the front crank seal. Let me tell you, the knowledge on this site is tremendous. I used @The Deputy suggestion to place and extension with a socket in the access hole hear the flywheel, worked like butta. HB broke loose with a 24" breaker bar. Anyhow, I got the HB pulled off and cleaned up. After inspection, there appears to be 2 grooves in it. I ordered a speedy sleeve PN: SKF-99192. I already had an ERR6490 on hand. Is there a specific seal I should use with the speedy sleeve since it increases the diameter ever so slightly? Or is it okay to use the original part number?
