Default getting lost need a straight answer..please

ok so i am 12 days away from taking my 97 Disco SD to work with me for the next 6 months in a small village in alaska and I am doing all the little things here to prepare it for it journey and make sure it gets me through the summer with flying colors. My question is this

With an automatic gearbox how to i properly read the fluid level on the atf dip stick.

1) the dipstick itself says engine cold while idling with two small holes near the bottom with a black round plastic piece on the bottom
2) the maintenance section of the rave manual 10 pg9 says check when fluid is cold engine idiling in neutral
3) Rave maintenance section 10 pg 13 says fluid cold engine idiling in park
4) Under chapter 44 of the rave under the "fault diagnosis" for zf auto gearbox it say "N" selected engine running at normal operating temps

(so many options)

So which one is it. I might add that there is really nothing wrong with my transmission, shifts good and smooth i just want to make sure all is well. I have been doing lots of searches and no real definitive answer. Also the rave says to use ATF Dextron IID is this correct?

i think p and n are not going to yield much of a difference, if any.
might try both and see. I wish I had that option.

That is strange...

By the way - Park and Idle is the same thing except P has a mechanical lock that engages the drive train.

Most Borg Warner transmissions need to be checked at normal operating temperature as that it what it will be when you are at a fuel stop and want to check all lubricants. Top mark is max. and lower mark is minimum - do not exceed either. The plastic tip is merely to assist sliding the dipstick down. ALWAYS check the dipstick for cotton remains after wiping it down with a rag - and be very careful to use paper for that job. In Switzerland and Germany everybody uses a real, actual chamois leather for that to prevent any possibility of cotton or paper residue into the tiny oil passages.

Every USA made car I ever worked on had hot on stick and a high /low marks with fill in between marks

Now my dodge ram requires in neutral something with that trans

Okay, perhaps I need some clarification then... My dip stick says cold & in natural to check; which I do. However, I thought the bottom mark was for cold & the top mark was for hot operating temperature. Should it be in between the marks when cold? if so, I need to add some tranny fluid.

Believe it should be in between cold, I did check mine today and noticed it does show slightly higher in neutral just like my dodge ram diesel

Yes should be between the dots unless someone knows different

From the Owner's Manual....
AUTOMATIC GEARBOX FLUID LEVEL CHECK
& TOP-UP
The automatic gearbox fluid must ONLY be
checked when the engine and gearbox are
COLD (see ’Note’ below).
Ensure the vehicle is resting on level ground,
then select ’P’ (park) and start the engine.
With the engine running at idle speed and
both foot brake and parking brake applied,
move the selector lever to position ’1’ and
then back to position ’P’.
With the engine running, withdraw the
dipstick from the filler tube and wipe the blade
clean. Reinsert the dipstick fully and withdraw
again to check the level. Top-up to maintain
the level between the UPPER and LOWER
markings on the dipstick, with a fluid meeting
the minimum specification defined in ’General
data’.
NOTE: In extreme ambient temperatures, the
level of fluid showing on the dipstick will vary.
To ensure an accurate reading, the level
should be checked at an ambient temperature
of 68° F (20° C).
DO NOT OVERFILL!
