Now that I'm parting out my 98 Disco Series I, and combined with my full time employment income (going on 7 months now) , slowly I'm progressing closer towards the Discovery Series II market. I have my eyes wide open, my budget set ($2,000-$3,500) and my decision is final! Within the following weeks I'll will have received my first $500 in profits from the parting out process - by the end of the month I will have $1,000 total saved up towards my goal. I've been on this forum actively since the beginning, and I've made several transactions with various members of this forum - I've never ripped anyone off, never been dishonest, never stolen or lied about anything I sold. Trust should now be established.

What I'm specifically looking for is a 99-2000 Land Rover Discovery Series II in overall "good" condition. I care not weather or not it has the 3 amigos illuminated. I care not if it needs power steering work, I care not if there are typical leaks, I care not if the sun roofs or power windows are working, I care not weather or not it's inspected or will pass inspection at the moment - "so long as the Discovery runs and drive good I'm happy."

I care about the overall condition of the exterior body panels, I care about the overall condition of the interior, I care about how the previous owners treated the Discovery, I care about the amount of rust accumulated, I care weather or not the Discovery contains the high/low differential shifter option - "so long as the Discovery runs and drives good I'm happy."


By my estimate I'll have somewhere around $3,000 or more by late August - early September 2011. I've asked twice before and I'll ask once again: Specifically I would prefer to make ongoing payments from the start of August - the end of September 2011. Payments via PayPal instant transfer as agreed by a notarized sighed mutual term contract. I would solely expect the owner to agree not to sell the rig to any other potential buyer and to "retain the Land Rover in their possession" until all payments have been successfully processed and the title sighed over to my ownership in which case I would then take the rig home permanently. I'm open to other arrangements so long as they are legal and honest. I'm willing to negotiate terms and I'm willing to provide "limited" legal proof of my identity and my employment status under the condition that you agree to a contract.

I'm not asking for the key to your Castle - just the honest opportunity to work towards a personal goal. For me one of those goals is a good condition Land Rover Discovery Series 2.

Sorry for the repost - My determination is unrelenting at the moment.

Good for you on setting a goal and taking the necessary steps to reach it...but why try and do it this way? I see NO real advantage for you to do it this way other than to lock up a great deal...however, you haven't even found that great deal, you are just trying to secure SOMETHING that will be ready for you when the cash is all there. And let me tell you....you don't want a "something" in the Rover world.

Save up your cash and keep on the lookout. When you see one that seems close to what you have saved up, check it out very closely and go from there. Depending on where you live, you won' find a "good driver" DII that isn't lacking in one of your major conditions, just make sure you know of which major condition it is lacking before you buy. Happy hunting! I love shopping for a Rover!

You should post your desires on the Discovery II Forum.

Just consider the pains you went thru as a learning process and the associated costs as "Tuition". Too bad it does not count toward a Degree from one of those Hallowed Halls of Higher Tuition, I mean Education.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of work do you do in your full-time employment.

If your transfer case is good, you might want to hold on to it. You could use that to upgrade one of the DII's that does not have the CDL shifter as standard equipment.

I would check into if the same tranny will work in one as well. There are a lot of DII's that have the front driveshaft fail and that usually destroys both the tranmission by knocking a hole in the case and often wipes out the Cat by banging into it as well.

Buying one of those would probably get you the Most Disco II For ZThe Least Amount of Money. Then you would have a Head Start on building a good Discovery by combining the best features of both models. Just something to consider..........

Yes up front the personal advantage for me is not so clear. Unfortunately I've never been a real pro at saving large sums of money randomly. What works for me, is working towards something that is promised to me so long as I obide by the agreed terms. Here and there I find nice Disco 2's, but then in a blink of an eye there gone! So i need a fishing line to hook the trophy and reel it in until its all mine.

I try not to make such high conditions and as noted in the post I'm willing to negotiate the condition of the Landy. Thanks for the advice nevertheless. The feeling of hunting for a new Landy is very exciting to me despite the ****ty economy. I will not let one bad experience ruin my impression of Land Rover. The skills I obtained have no $$$ and will save my hundreds in the future.

Danny let me give you alittle short story about myself: In my short 23 years of life, I've had ONLY 3 vehicles... 97 Mercury Grand Marquis GS V8 2WD, then I moved on to a 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 Straight 6, and finally the 98 Land Rover Discovery V8 AWD. In all this time combined, I've never been mechanically inclined and further than changing a tire, filling tires with air and interior/exterior conditioning... Never owned or carried any tools and always relied on friends or local mechanics to diagnose and repair all my mechanical failures. Spent lots of money and in the end never got anywhere - but then when I got the Landy everything changed. Suddenly I found myself under the hood replacing the power steering gearbox and ps hose, replacing the steering damper, doing my own tuneup etc anything and EVERYTHING. Its almost as if I woke up one day and acquired some common mechanical sense. Maybe it was a result of all those childhood years playing with legos! Whatever the case today I feel far more confident in my own abilities and I recently just upgraded to a "level 2" tool box to house my increasing tool collection! Now look at me - tearing down a Disco for parts to sell all awhile learning even more how things work, come apart and go back together again. By the time i get that Disco 2 - I'll be a unofficial Land Rover Mechanic pro! haha. I feel that I'm ready to take on the challenge of Discovery Series 2!

What kind of work do I do? lol You guys probably dont wanna know ... I work as a "housemen" at a brand new hotel in a stuck up college town! I clean public restrooms and all lobby areas. Provide customer service and sometimes do Vale service. I'm becoming an all around jack of trades though my major is Land Rover haha.

Yes thats an interesting idea regarding the diff, transfer case and trans though honestly I need to money more. But Ill see what happens. I'm wondering if there IS A WAY TO MODIFY THE FRONT PROP SHAFT TO MAKE IT GREASEABLE? I'm considering drilling a small precise hole in a disco 2 shaft and putting in a nipple and inserting some grease... now you guys and harp on me!

These cars are fun to work on, I just wish everything would stay working without something else happening.
